I got invited to join a “gravel” ride with some friends.
I took my CX bike. Reminder I am a roadie with very few off-road skills.
The gravel part of the route was fine. The paved part, obv, was no problem.
The somewhat technical single track with wet leaves and wet roots and huge rocks scared the crap out of me. I had to dismount and walk several times. About 3/4 into the ride, it became very hilly with loose gravel bordering on MTB type terrain, so I turned back and wished my friends good luck.
I think I need to either stick to the road, or attend some off-road skills clinics.
One of the guys fell several times, and I believe everyone fell at least once.

Sounds like your buddies took you on a legit MTB trail! I don't think it's normal to crash on gravel rides haha

I thought about taking my MTB out today for my easy hour for the first time since Lilly was born. But, we got some patches of heavy rain last night and the ground was a bit moist; didn't want to screw up the trails since the tires might have sunk in a little.

Well, Mrs. GJ and I walked all over Lancaster today. It sure does seem to be a Walkable City! Checked out an open house that was right near the old Hamilton Watch factory, now turned into condominiums. She's now taking a well-earned nap.
One problem is that although it seems like a nice place, we're still in love with California. Maybe it's time to buy lottery tickets.

I've also been with friends who fall multiple times on the same ride and this is usually from trying to follow someone with greater skills.
I did a ride where a friend fell 5 times trying to chase a guy with much more experience. I urged him to stay with me and not go after the other guy but he wouldn't listen.
Happens on the road, too. Especially with riders who are fit and strong but new enough that they don't know what they are doing.

My problem is that when I fall, I tend to break. Therefore, I sold my mtb, CX, and gravel bikes.

I didn't fall yesterday but I did have to dab and walk a bit. Did the outer blue loop and it all seemed green to me, then hit the Bridge expecting about the same but hoping it was more towards actual blue. It turned out to be pretty technical. Some trails on MTBproject they'll sneak a little black diamond in the blue square, gotta watch out for those

Not a bad town, people were friendly and much more laid back than L.A. But the summer heat and smog rules it out for me.

Tonight we had pizza bagels. Don't laugh lol. it's a comfort food I love and easy as hell to whip up. I use tomato paste below the cheese and put some oregano and pepper flakes on there. Usually served with our default salad of arugula, chopped tomatoes and shaved Parmesan under balsamic vinaigrette.
Tomorrow I will make a veggie stew we love, carrot/celery/onion mince with more sliced onions, mushrooms, let the liquid cook off and then deglaze with wine before filling the pot up with broth, diced tomatoes and more veggies (incl. potato). Served with some sort of hearty bread and maybe a side salad if we so wish. And a glass of medium to full bodied red, of course.

Mrs John heard about a dog rescue that started in the hills above where we used to live. Dogs can be adopted or fostered from there. Today she bought a big bag of dog food to donate and visit with the dogs. Very low budget operation and they need everything so she is going to take some stuff to them. At least people were coming in and playing with the dogs.
