They would deteriorate in damp conditions or dissolve from a splash and pop at exactly the wrong time. The hydrostatic release was a big improvement, but they're expensive and the re-arm kit comes with the whole thing.

The term "brutal" immediately comes to mind.

you might be on to something....
Here's the real pickle. Assuming you are correct. And I go buy another scale. Then get on that new scale and weigh myself. If it reads 239.2 or worse yet what if it's higher? At least with the old scale I'm not getting any fatter.....

I need to get started with that, softball season fast approaches. I wonder what team was savy enough to draft me.

I find it very unlikely you actually weighed within 0.1 of a pound multiple days in a row.

my weight seems to have gone down a couple lbs. mostly in muscle, and there mostly upper body mass. not supposed to do a pushup, pullup or situp for another few weeks. at least I can start riding the trainer and prevent the biking legs from dropping off the face of the earth. that's big.

Yes and it's sweet of you to remember that and mention it! Sailors wear fingerless gloves to protect their palms from rope burn and maybe they were improving his grip on that wet, uncovered, wheel.

Long story, but essentially: we've always rented here at home base in order to fund/maintain/improve our N.B. property. Other than pension funds etc. it is our main investment. We were in previous house here for over 10 years; very happy there. Had a conversation with landlord(-ess, a high-flying realtor) last spring, during which we were assured of at least three more years blah blah blah. We were then blind-sided last summer with a formal Notice to Quit; grounds: she wanted to move back into house. Wanted us out October 31; we said "f**k you; we'll get out when we can"; we moved over the course of the first two weeks of December -- very tiring/stressful -- then both promptly became seriously ill with Covid. So much for December/first week or so of January. Still feeling run down/fatigued, but slowly improving.
The upside: we are in the (very new) building we wanted, in a very nice apartment (2 bdrm; den; etc.). Given the virtually 0% vacancy rate here, we were lucky. Had to use family connections (Mrs. Badger's) to get the place, but get it we did.

I continue to how so many people can afford housing in a place like Kingston, much less Ottawa, Toronto, etc. It's crazy in the bigger cities, at least (I haven't looked at rural areas).

I know very little about the state of play in the U.S., but housing (renting or owning) up here is just ... well ... nuts expensive, especially in mid-size and larger cities. Frankly, many people simply can't afford decent housing, and their number is increasing all the time. There are many, many sad stories out there. We are very fortunate to be able to afford comfortably what we must pay in rent to have a nice place.
