Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I saw it early at the theater with one of my GFs. Didn't care for it.

I saw it at Pitt during an overnight visit my senior year after I matriculated. It was at the William Pitt Union before renovation in 1981. They got somewhat recent releases to show on the weekends for a buck.

A whole lot of farm country out there I’m guessing.

  • The 414(now the only road bike I have(while Bob is here). It’s been and continues to be a big adjustment)) was making a huge drivetrain racket yesterday . UGE. Couldn’t figure it out. How could it get so dirty so quick? This morning, in the stand, I saw that the chain was only riding on the upper pulley wheel of the rd. It’s a Suntour Cyclone first gen open cage number. Fixed that, did a little cable adjustment, a little limit screw adjustment and it’s good to go. While I had it in the stand I tweaked the spokes that needed tweaking to stop brake rub, and replaced the rear skewer. The old one wasn’t holding the wheel centered.
  • And while we’re here a tiny rant about closed cage derailleurs. The open cage is such a wonderful invention. And too short lived.
Edit: Why does this post have paragraph markers?

It's about 50 degrees, 20mph with gusts to 30, but it hasn't started to rain yet. I could go out and get a couple hours in, maybe. Or not.

Flying out tomorrow AM to Boston for a conference on using AI in Biopharma. Not looking forward to it - low social needs introvert and all that- AND I'll be off the bike for a week, because after the conference I'm flying down to visit The Home Office. Coming back Friday night.

Fiesta Island time trial, 1st/2 in 35+ division, fourth fastest time overall. I rode a 27:26 on 275w, at 26.9 MPH.

Windy today, speed band was 25 - 30 MPH depending on location on the island. These races are real early, so even though they are local, I never get enough warmup in and always feel like my cardio is a bit blocked and not ready. Mostly limited by discomfort in the legs, but HR is far from maxed out. Still, it was fun to get out and give it a go!

One of the three faster times was from an athlete in the Men's 60+ age division..... Wow. What a specimen. I know I have a ways to go as far as optimizing my equipment and position goes in time trial, but still, getting beaten by an old dude is very humbling! 60+ counts as old to you guys, right?

Good job! Do they go when it's raining?

And, yes, I remember 60 fondly.

big john I think they go rain or shine. I was prepared to abandon given the weather report, but fortunately it held for us. Our forecast has rain in it for today, but looks like it will come a little later. Is it rainy up in the LA basin?

Kudos!

In my mind you’re not old until 70 arrives. Think young and live longer imho.

Not yet. They keep moving the timing of the storm. Was supposed to start raining last night. I rode around for a couple hours and it got pretty dark but didn't drip on me.

edit, I actually live in the NE corner of the San Fernando Valley, so it could be raining in L.A. for all I know.
