Here in Maryland there's snow on the ground, but it's not the picturesque kind. It's the crappy, remnant snow you get, days after a big snowfall where it's just an ugly nuisance. Oh, and it seems like everybody went absolutely ape**** with salt.

Business day 3 of retirement. I wrestled this out of one of my tires. Only the head was sticking out. Tire was going flat as I parked during Friday’s storm.

I have vacation in August, and Lily and I want to go on a vacation. She wants something tropical with an all inclusive. I am okay with that but I want stuff to do. I really don’t want to sit on the beach the whole time or pool. We both don’t drink so I can see myself getting bored. Any suggestions of where to go with things to do would be awesome.

My club president has announced the Sunday ride is merging with a shop ride at their location. This is the end of an era. When I joined in 1989 the Sunday rides always went to a cafe in Santa Monica with a huge outdoor seating area and cyclists form all over would gather and chat, catch up on gossip, see old friends. I did that for years. Around 2001 I went back to the Sunday rides after living out of the area for 4 years. I did nearly every Sunday ride until 2020 when the schedule was shut down.
These rides were short with a long coffee stop where we would talk about the Saturday ride we had done, tell stories and laugh and have a great time. Those Sunday rides were a highlight of my week for 20 years and I really missed them when c19 came to town. It never got back to that after the club started scheduling rides again. Even the Saturday rides are much smaller in turnout but the Sunday thing was a dud the few times I did go out there.
I always hoped we could get back to that. Those fun sprint-fests with tired legs to coffee and laughter, lies, teasing, and friends. It makes me sad that it is gone. A very enjoyable part of cycling that will never be back.

No kids, Snorkeling would be cool, jet skis. I like to explore/ hike. If I can get my hands on a bike that would be cool too. I’m not sure that we discussed a budget yet. We really don’t know what is out there, we havnt traveled anywhere other than orlando.
Honestly, I would rather go to Zion or California and drive down route 1 but that’s not what she wants.

Here are my thoughts for first timers to the islands:
Grand Cayman - lots of snorkeling, most like the US in terms of development, Atlantis submarine is really cool, can find just about any water sport you want, Ritz Carlton is really nice
Providenciales in Turks and Caicos - one of our all time favorite vacation spots, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling everywhere (there is one reef just off the shore that is protected and has a lot of activity on it so lots to see), good food, day trip to West Caicos to see the caves with stops to snorkel on Iguana Island and a beach where there are tons of starfish.
St. John, USVI - probably the prettiest place on Earth, get a car and explore the island, lots of snorkeling, has not completely recovered from Irma. Almost the whole island is a national park. There are hiking trails in the mountains that are worth doing.
Antigua - Some really cool old English navy forts overlooking the water, zip lining in the rain forest, a cool blow hole along the water, really pretty beaches.
If you can, skip the all-inclusive and try different places for local cuisine. You'll thank me for that later. A lot of the Creole food is really good, and you don't get that as much at the all-inclusives.
The Caribbean is not a bike friendly destination, so put that aside.

My "Usual Suspects" midweek ride is on for today. However, I was "volunteered" to work today as one of my partners is away for a prolonged family medical emergency (her dad had a stroke and is in rehab so she has to watch her mom who has dementia, so it's a legit absence), and they needed someone to cover her morning "walk-in" hours.
So I am stuck at work today. Phooey.

Fun fact: my first custom bike was made in Rockville.
The frame builder was the go-to custom builder for the DC/Baltimore area in the mid and late 1980’s, now long out of business. I drove down to his shop a few times BITD when I was living in Bawlmer.
