McBain Record track frame from Tasmania, probably Reynolds 531, top tube dent, Africa/Jamaica paint job. I fear that the seat tube may be a centimeter or a centimeter and a half too short for me, but we shall see what it is like once I build my wheel set and put it on the frame.

Here's a bitzer I picked up last weekend off trademe for NZD34 (approx USD22). The frame's a Yamaguchi. At 107cm c-c wheelbase it's a bit stretched for me, but it could make a nice tourer. Dia Compe brakes, le Pree derailleurs, SR stems and Suzue hubs. Everything cleaned up nicely with the exception of the crank - a butt-ugly, budget shimano biopace number. They tyres feel like mountain bike treads compared to tubulars, but maybe I'll learn to love them. OK, so it doesn't exactly streak away at the lights, but once it has a full head of steam....

[QUOTE=Charles Wahl;6081220]I'm not going to tell you what I paid for it (you could find out), because it's more than I could have bought a new B17 for, but it's a B5N, the poor man's Professional. I like the pebbled upper surface. Smells real nice. Anybody know how to date these?
Well? Did you date it?

Sometimes you get what you pay for. Bought a work stand from harbor fake... It would work for what I need it to if the holes were drilled on the proper sides...

+1 Harbor Freight workstand. Mine is headed for Goodwill. Totally, completely worthless. Lesson learned.

If you really want to tempt fate go to Harbor Freight and get yourself a circular saw or an arc welder. See you on the other side.

Sorry, I didn't know that you expected a response! I swear that I can find no number stamped on the undercarriage; just "Made in England." I looked with my glasses on, and a magnifying glass, using a strong flashlight. Nada.
I plan to put this B5N on my "racer" bike, and move the B17 onto the "townie" that I'm building (Nishiki Prestige frame, 700C wheelset with Velocity Synergy rims, 32 mm tires, S-A 3-speed on rear; Shimano 600 components, SKS fenders).

LMAO... I hit the Horror freight now and then, but I don't buy anything anymore advanced from a technology perspective than a $5 airbrush kit. They also have some passable cheap rolls of emery cloth.

I just picked up a really cool old bicycle motor kit. It looks very custom made. Not like alot of the hobbled together ones around. I don't know if it runs or not. I don't even know what to put it on. Well that said, the price was right! Free at my friendly LBS. And he threw in a TA chainring with spacers and all just to sweeten the deal!
Today was a good day.

I drilled some new holes so I could put it together correctly. It seems like it's going to work for what I bought it for which was sitting on a milk crate adjusting gears and lubing chains. For $10 if I get that out of it I figure it wasn't a bad investment. Even if I didn't use it, the $2 soldering iron I bought at the same time more than paid for it. No check engine light on the Protege, 4 more MPG, and a bit more power on the sad days that I have to drive.

Little side trip to Boston this weekend for a conference and managed to do some sneaky bike stuff while there:
-Walked through Harris Cyclery; just as a tribute to SB
-Bought a Bridgestone XO-1 frame
-and dropped a lot of money on a very cool Surly Cross Check with a Nexus rear hub. No vintage, but it is vintage-like.

My latest acquisition: 1987 Fuso, 30th Anniversary edition.
Perhaps someone could tell me if it was a catch or a Numbskull buy of the day.

Sweet! A british framebuilder. How much did you snag it for? I see close-ratio chainrings then known as "changeover" that were popular in the sixties and seventies. Some closeups please!
I didn't read his whole site, but go to https://www.prodigalchild.net/Bicycle.htm and start at the left to view Dave Moulton's bikebuilding history. Depending on the price, a good to great find!

Yep, SR chainring. Not a bad find then, if it fits you and you can get the seatpost out. Superior lugwork and finish on Dave's frames. Shine the bits up and buy yourself some nice hidden-cable levers and you'll love it. I recently bought two pairs of Shimano levers for my road bikes to replace my Campag levers and I've no regrets - no more bloody cables in the way. Our dear departed Sheldon said were "the finest". BRL23 Shimano Tiagra "Æro" levers $44.95 from Harris. They give you better mech. advantage too, over the stock levers.

Unless there's something else that the pictures don't show, the paint damage and seatpost chafe could be just classic chain-and-lock-wrapped-around-seatpost. Not a brilliant move on a frame of this class, but no killer either. If the rest of paint is ok, I'd say touchup the paint and forget it. These were not meant to be wall art anyway - ride it!

I finally got around to snapping a couple of pics of that Hyda-Bike folder I snatched up for $5.98. The tires hold air, the generator and tail light work but it needs a headlight bulb. I'd like to change the handlebars but with part of the brake levers being welded on it might be a chore getting them through the stem.
And yes, that's that POS Harbor Fake work stand
