ITS NOT MY BIKE. . .
the owner/founder of Speedplay owns it (and the replica)
see Bicycling June or July issue there's a write up there.
sigh. . . i wish it were mine

Just joking--FOLKS, THE BIKE'S NOT MARTY'S BIKE.
Is the owner/founder of Speedplay a BF member? We need to get him to join up, Marty, that would take the heat off you...

1984 Specialized Expedition Touring
1984 Specialized Expedition Touring
I had been on the lookout for a bike in my size with bosses for racks and canti brakes for a couple of years (I have a fantasy to build up something with the elegance of what one sees in The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles). And, by gosh, at the cooperative bike garage where I volunteer, a Specialized Expedition Touring appeared in the donations! I traded in two tiny 70s electroforged schwinns and a huffy beach cruiser for it.
The rear hub is dated 1984. Ollo_Ollo tells me that they were all gray, like this one. The frame is "Touring Special Edition" double-butted cro-mo. It has suntour mountech front & rear drs, sugino AT triple crank (48-44-30, about), 5 sp freewheel, suntour symmetric downtube shifters (no bosses, alas), SR hubs with wolber rims, shimano brakes and suntour superbe levers (no suicide levers), specialized-branded stem and drop bars. Shimano dropouts. Also what appears to be original Sanyo BB dynamo. The frame is drilled to route the wire internally. Brazed-on bosses galore: three bottle mount spots, rack mounts on fork, rack mounts on rear stays, fender mounts. The frame is awesome.
The paint's not so good... lots of scratches. It will clean up OK with plenty of Turtle products, but I think some kind of new treatment is in its future. I've just discovered a local powder coater who will sandblast and coat a frame for $115. However, there are a few frames ahead of this one in line.
The front hub appears to have exploded. I like fatter tires than are on there anyway, so I may go with new wheels entirely.
Not sure what equipment I'll salvage. It all appears to be pretty good, except for rusted bolts everywhere. I'm thinking stainless steel bolts.
I guess I'll have to retain the derailleur (instead of internally geared hub) since it has an integral hanger. What do people think of the Mountech stuff?
Prepping the photos...

Roll-Monroe-Co, those are my second favorite cantilevers. Looks a little neglected, can't wait to see it refurbished.

I got two today. A ladies Schwinn World Sport and a mystery tandem. Upon further inspection I'm under the impression that the tandem is a home made job. The Schwinn needs cables and tires. The tandem would have been ridable but the tires were too rotted to stay on the rims. I just took them off for the moment since I had the wheels off to bring it home on the back of my Protege. The tandem is a mix of odd parts and has a few crappy looking welds. I will put tires on it and clean it up a bit and see how it rides. If I keep it I'll upgrade some parts. the odd thing is the person who built it used 2 double cranksets insteat of a double and a single. I suppose that's what they had.
(all but three of my tandem pics are over 100kb after resizing. I'll post them later, I just don't feel like editing them again)

I was vacationing in Hilton Head, and the other day I dropped into the popular local "Bargain Box" thrift shop. There was a Raleigh Sprite in excellent condition, right there at the front of the store. Alas, it also had a "SOLD" sticker right beneath the $40 price tag. Can't win them all, I guess.
There was a also an ancient Schwinn, but it looked like it needed more help than I wanted to give. It spent too many years at the beach, I suppose.

Man, that's a nice touring bike, can't wait to see it refurbished either! I stopped by the local Salvation Army, but there wasn't much. They had two, bith of them insanely priced for a thrift store. The first was a repainted and polished up Le Tour in solid red with no decals. Probably a base model, as it had stamped drops, and what looked like a Continental fork(fingered chrome cap). It had really nice tires and a Vetta saddle, but the seat post was shimmed and it had the chrome wheels. A nice looking bike for sure, but no way I was going to drop $130 for it. The other was a splatter painted(stock) Peugeot MTB, for $100. Maybe I will get lucky at the flea market this weekend, but so far the bikes are stacking up faster than I can fix them up. The Voyageur is coming along, but the LBS installed a cartridge BB with the wrong length spindle, so I have to beat it to the store before they close tomorrow night.,,,,BD

Catch of the day. I picked this up for $10 on a Craigslist posting a few days ago. Sorry, no before pics. It actually didn't look that much different than it does now; it was in great shape. Aired the tires. cleaned and adjusted. Swapped out the stock grey seat (everything was original except the tires) and pedals, added bottle cages. These cages have since been swapped out for identical silver cages to better match the paint scheme. Will mount the computer from my Nishiki in a couple of days. Did a 35 miler on the Natchez Trace June 28th with my daughter on her 1987 Schwinn Prelude. The Trek tracks like it's on rails. No problems, it's all good. Absolutely gorgeous scenery and no traffic! See my posting on " Where did you ride today" posted Tuesday or Wed. for ride pics.

As for me, I've been looking for a vintage step-thru bike for my wife ...
So today I'm out driving, on an errand in an unfamiliar part of town. I spot a garage sale at a church-run retirement home. The place practically shouts, old bikes are here! Sure enough they have some - but in the back, not part of the sale.
I chat with a priest, and $20 later I leave with a yellow 1973 Schwinn Breeze in good working order. Looks all original, but with newer tires. The front generator light works, the rear one does not - hopefully just needs a bulb. Overall the bike should clean up very nicely.
Pics to come.

Hit the one of the local Salvation Army stores and walked away with an unused pair of Nike road shoes in my size for $10.
Not as good a deal as a lot of the things that are posted here, but I was pleased!

It's a nice Peug with or without the saddle. Great catch! Finding that would easily make my week.

I saw that very same peugeot in the trash last month, heh only it didnt have a seat post/seat on it, it was that very size by the looks of it, way too big for me otherwise I probably woulda rescued it. I did grab the front wheel though as I was interested in the Normandy hub.

One of them first produced carbon bikes? Vitus or Alan maybe? Interesting stuff, I'm guessing all the tubing is epoxied together.. probably really flexy now?
