Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I mean I know what a chainring guard is for but did know why that was only covering a small portion. The vid Hothead286 posted cleared that up for me, thanks.

Easier or harder, depending on how good you are at spinning.

When installing double clips and straps, do you have to have two slots on your pedal to thread each strap in?

No. The laws of physics will keep the second strap in place even without a slot.

Ok. I'm considering switching to clips and straps because I don't ride the Earl enough to warrant using Eggbeaters. I was thinking double straps just because they feel more secure.

Dear Scrod,

Are those Sapim CX-Ray spokes strong enough to warrant 28/24 spokes on the street?

In my experience, good laminated leather straps (not that All-City crap) are much better.

I've had these laminated leather straps for about 30 years now:

They actually have lasted longer than the pedals; the cage failed a couple years ago d/t erosion from my cleats, but the straps are still going strong:
