Yeah and, when you start composting, it's amazing how much less you're actually sending to a landfill (where it'll never see a chance to decompose and provide useful nutrients in our lifetimes). Minneapolis just started city-wide organic waste composting (so now we have waste, recycling and compost bins); hopefully it'll go to good use and even more will follow suit.
In Denton, we have a dedicated recycling can and pickup in addition to trash. And if you leave bags of grass or tree limbs, etc. they take that and compost it to make dirt available for sale from the city.
Also, a landfill here is part of a grad project from my school (UTA) that captures methane to produce energy.
Info here on the landfill.

Hey guys, remember this thing?
Yeah, so it's been like that since December. But the trailer pulling has put the fire back under me and I even PUT SHIFT CABLES ON IT last night. Wow. Hopefully tonight: the chain and maybe the brake cables. I'm hoping to get it at least rolling for a nieghborhood test this weekend. I'm very reluctant to throw any money at it, but I would like some different bars and to totally rebuild the wheels on it. As it is, the rear is just barely usable.
The awesome thing is that I found the brake lever I pulled of of my MIL's bike when I put some integrated shifters on her bike. They were much cleaner and they had a Campyesque quick release built into the lever. That is going to be handy for undoing the Canti brakes when needed.

No curbside recycling here either; we're just north of the creek which delineates the northern boundary of pickup area.

Yeah my FIL is actually an avid biker. Not super serious 200+ miles a week, but he and his buddy do a 30-50 mile ride every Sunday morning, he commutes to work, and he'll do the occasional charity ride. He and the MIL actually went to buy a couch as a young married couple and came home with a couple of bikes instead. She doesn't ride as much, but she has a road bike and a hybrid. The three daughters? Nothing. Oh well.

That's one thing I REALLY like about Denton. In Arlington, we didn't even have a recycling option. If you wanted to do it, you had to collect is separately and go to the Library, which we did.
In Denton, we have a dedicated recycling can and pickup in addition to trash. And if you leave bags of grass or tree limbs, etc. they take that and compost it to make dirt available for sale from the city.

I used to work at the Foxwoods casino in Connecticut. Holy crap, yes. I had a tech support job (actually going out and fixing things, not being a call center drone) and almost every time I was going through the employee-only tunnels there were massive carts of food destined to be chucked that I was offered my pick of. Absolutely disgusting the amount of food that was chucked. I know I've seen something about trying to get a legal way to safely donate unused food, but that might have only been here in Austin.

Hotel catering is the worst. I sat through a boring lunch meeting in a Chicago hotel once thinking about this. There was food there for 50 and only 20 attendees. Same for the breakdast meeting that preceded us. Think about a convention week in Chi. How many meeting rooms. How many meetings. How many hotels all over town. The waste could literally feed a small city.

MEANWHILE, we the consumers are taxed to subsidize the farmers to produce more than can be consumed. DOH!

California is crazy with how cheap produce is. Yesterday when I got home from work, I saw the flyer for the Mexican grocery store near my house & the first crop of cherries has arrived and they were on sale.
So I went over to get some cherries & wound up also getting a mini watermelon, 6 guavas, 2 mangos, 2 jalapeños, a bunch of cilantro, a cucumber, an onion, 4 zucchini and a lime.
Total came to $6.58.
Tonight dessert is fruit salad: mango, watermelon, guava and cherry, with a squeeze of lime.

Bigger companies like that casino probably have policies that prohibit employees taking home leftovers, though. That really is sad, and it could so easily be prevented on the front end by just ordering and preparing food you expect to be consumed, not just putting everything out there to look opulent and then tossing the leftovers because hey, we have lots of money so screw it.

Went to a going away party for one of the fastest riders in our club last night. His kids are all graduated now, so he's moving back to FL to take care of his parents.
How fast? He has the KOM for the Hotter than Hell Hundred route (which pros ride), and if you go to the livestrong foundation he's the cyclist on the marketing materials for this year (https://www.teamlivestrong.org/events/). I hitched a ride down to the last event with him, he's a great guy. He said he did his first century at age 12 on a bmx bike... I can't even imagine that.

Some of it is from California, some is from Mexico. I mostly buy stuff that is on sale and I can't say I've seen any effect on produce costs from the drought. Milk and eggs, yes. Produce, no.

Yes, that's crazy cheap. There must be a glut of avocados this spring, because even way over here they've been 2 for $1 . . . I don't ever recall that before.

Since we're all so into weight and calories, I thought folks might find this interesting:

It's really kind of bizarre. Luckily, I don't think I've ever weighed more than 240, but if I'm shooting for 185 +/- 5 pounds how can I know what my body is going to think about that? It's certainly not as drastic as something like 350 to 180, but still. We'll see. I won't know until I try.
Also, I've been calorie counting again for the past few days. Getting back on the bike has encouraged me to get on it again. I'm just looking for a pound a week now, so nothing drastic.

The main set of this morning's workout was 10x100yd, on the 2:00, flat-out sprint. For once I held or increased all the way through except the final one, starting at 1:18 and getting down to 1:14. My pattern used to always be one REALLY fast, then holding a few seconds slower for a while, then dropping off with fatigue.

It all makes perfect sense from an evolutionary perspective, though.
