Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's one thing I REALLY like about Denton. In Arlington, we didn't even have a recycling option. If you wanted to do it, you had to collect is separately and go to the Library, which we did.

In Denton, we have a dedicated recycling can and pickup in addition to trash. And if you leave bags of grass or tree limbs, etc. they take that and compost it to make dirt available for sale from the city.

Also, a landfill here is part of a grad project from my school (UTA) that captures methane to produce energy.

Info here on the landfill.

Yeah, so it's been like that since December. But the trailer pulling has put the fire back under me and I even PUT SHIFT CABLES ON IT last night. Wow. Hopefully tonight: the chain and maybe the brake cables. I'm hoping to get it at least rolling for a nieghborhood test this weekend. I'm very reluctant to throw any money at it, but I would like some different bars and to totally rebuild the wheels on it. As it is, the rear is just barely usable.

The awesome thing is that I found the brake lever I pulled of of my MIL's bike when I put some integrated shifters on her bike. They were much cleaner and they had a Campyesque quick release built into the lever. That is going to be handy for undoing the Canti brakes when needed.
Your MIL has a bike? Oh wait. My kid's spouses have an FIL who has bikes. Never mind.

No curbside recycling here either; we're just north of the creek which delineates the northern boundary of pickup area.

Yeah my FIL is actually an avid biker. Not super serious 200+ miles a week, but he and his buddy do a 30-50 mile ride every Sunday morning, he commutes to work, and he'll do the occasional charity ride. He and the MIL actually went to buy a couch as a young married couple and came home with a couple of bikes instead. She doesn't ride as much, but she has a road bike and a hybrid. The three daughters? Nothing. Oh well.

Ah, yes - we have yard waste, too. That program has been around for some time, and I think that there's a different term for that, it's not true composting iirc, but the organics composting includes most food waste and natural fibers such as cardboard and cotton swabs, etc.

Cool. The inability and/or unwillingness to address growing concerns of waste and energy needs is frustrating, so it's always good to see some kind of effort being made.

Man, I gotta get some drop bars on the KHS. Either that or figure out how to get back to Vancouver and bring the Lemond or Scapin back here with me...

Absolutely. Nobody wants to be caught shorthanded for fear of damaging reputation. So they over-order, and the excess gets tossed in the dumpster.

MEANWHILE, we the consumers are taxed to subsidize the farmers to produce more than can be consumed. DOH!

Related unrelated note: I work for a company that designs and manufactures machines (stupid robots) to remotely operate industrial circuit breakers. We got a massive job years back to design a bunch of stuff for Foxwoods. I've seen lots of big jobs, but Foxwoods seemed to have more different types of circuit breakers than we even had on hand. That place was freaking huge. I ended up finishing up the order last year. I think I designed the last dozen+ machines we sent to them.

Total came to $6.58.

Tonight dessert is fruit salad: mango, watermelon, guava and cherry, with a squeeze of lime.
Wow, that's cheap! Is that all CA grown stuff? Has the recent drought affected prices any?

It is a huge problem. I will say that having worked for a catering company a while back while in college, a lot of the waste from big parties does end up getting eaten by the staff. If we'd do a Christmas event at a wealthy person's home, for instance, I'd have leftover ham for sandwiches for the next couple of weeks.

Bigger companies like that casino probably have policies that prohibit employees taking home leftovers, though. That really is sad, and it could so easily be prevented on the front end by just ordering and preparing food you expect to be consumed, not just putting everything out there to look opulent and then tossing the leftovers because hey, we have lots of money so screw it.

Went to a going away party for one of the fastest riders in our club last night. His kids are all graduated now, so he's moving back to FL to take care of his parents.

How fast? He has the KOM for the Hotter than Hell Hundred route (which pros ride), and if you go to the livestrong foundation he's the cyclist on the marketing materials for this year (https://www.teamlivestrong.org/events/). I hitched a ride down to the last event with him, he's a great guy. He said he did his first century at age 12 on a bmx bike... I can't even imagine that.

Some of it is from California, some is from Mexico. I mostly buy stuff that is on sale and I can't say I've seen any effect on produce costs from the drought. Milk and eggs, yes. Produce, no.

Yes, that's crazy cheap. There must be a glut of avocados this spring, because even way over here they've been 2 for $1 . . . I don't ever recall that before.

It's really kind of bizarre. Luckily, I don't think I've ever weighed more than 240, but if I'm shooting for 185 +/- 5 pounds how can I know what my body is going to think about that? It's certainly not as drastic as something like 350 to 180, but still. We'll see. I won't know until I try.

Also, I've been calorie counting again for the past few days. Getting back on the bike has encouraged me to get on it again. I'm just looking for a pound a week now, so nothing drastic.

The main set of this morning's workout was 10x100yd, on the 2:00, flat-out sprint. For once I held or increased all the way through except the final one, starting at 1:18 and getting down to 1:14. My pattern used to always be one REALLY fast, then holding a few seconds slower for a while, then dropping off with fatigue.

Well you're not losing at anything like that sort of speed. Which is good. I'm going down about 2lbs/ month. Which, if I keep it up, is fine. You won't be doing crazy metabolic damage to yourself like that.

I've never approached obesity (I'm 6'3", most I've ever weighed was ~220, 40 lbs less than that now), but it still just makes you feel like there's a crushing biological inevitability to gradually gaining weight until you're fat and middle aged. Unless you're willing to constantly feel a little bit hungry.

It all makes perfect sense from an evolutionary perspective, though.

I should really start doing some workouts like that. I end up just swimming. No discipline.
