The objective is to pack them as closely together as possible. Some people are in the unenviable position of being limited in their bike purchases by storage space. For those people I recommend making friends with those that have more storage room than bikes (I know, how can this be?) and bone up on the Zero Bike concept.
...plus, no one I know has unlimited space for my bikes unfortunately...it is a sad truth.

I'm impressed by how many of you can access your garage walls. I can barely see mine.

The one I have is branded Monkey Bars. Amazon sells it. Maybe others, too. It's ok, but honestly some coated hooks from the hardware store and some wood would be cheaper and perfectly fine. I had some hung on hooks that were mounted on studs spaced 16" and liked the spacing better.

When I moved into my new home last year, my highest priority on Day 1 was mounting the bike hooks in the garage in the most convenient locations possible, before the rest of my stuff was moved in and took up that wall space. I'm glad I did, since now I can't see any of the walls.

If you think hanging a grocery getter is hard try a tandem! It barely fit in this one car garage where the car is parked every day.

Even hanging from a pulley system challenges the arms to lift. The frame alone is 13 lbs. This picture was before mounting the pulley system and was a real challenge to lift the entire bike up and over a hook.

I was hoping the ceiling was a bit taller so I could mount over the garage door. Ended up using that space for the wheel barrel.

I also hang bikes on 16" studs and then squeeze more bikes in between hung from the wall a bit lower. It helps that I ride fairly narrow bars (mostly 40cm). I agree that it's not a big deal to angle the adjacent bikes a little bit out of the way when taking down or putting up the bike. I could perhaps squeeze in one more hook in between the Colnago and Merlin. Another suggestion is to use foam pads ("pool noodles") on the top tubes or at other contact points.

I store mine pretty tight, I can't remember the spacing between hooks but I think it's about 9"-10". Bikes are staggered, one up one down etc.
I'll admit, it is tricky to bring them down and put them back.

Wall storage is easy, especially if you have significant saddle-to-bar drop, then you can put the hooks at the same height and there's no interference. You can space the hooks about 2" wider than you handlebars.
It's storage on the floor that's the problem. I have to pass each successive bike's top tube under the drops of the last one. BUT, this way I can keep 9 bikes in the corner.
Then I got a 10th bike. Now I have to leave one on the trainer....
