Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can't explain it, maybe I'm just enjoying a temporary period of reduced fatigue? Or maybe it's the oft-anticipated arrival of #dadwatts? I'm sure the depth isn't there, but maybe I could still attack the hell out of a criterium on this low volume.

Keep to your crits on the west coast!!!!!!!

Felt like crap at the start of the ride. Not sick, just no legs and really tired. We start with some twisty roads and a bit of climbing and were headed to a steep climb. The hammer princess doesn't need much warm up and she wants to hammer all the climbs these days. After realizing I couldn't hang they talked her into backing off and skipping the steep stuff.

After a bit of easier riding I started feeling better and we went to the break for coffee and snacks. The burrito was larger than last time and when the staff forgot to bring an order of tater tots, they brought a huge basket of tots to make up for it. So two of us ate way too much and paid for it on the ride back. Beautiful day, no problem with the wind over there.

Woah, 5 flybys in 53 minutes!!! That's gotta be a record for me this year.

Are flybys making a comeback?

Prolly not, just a fluke.

Maybe? Although we didn't actually flyby.

Transition woes at KCB tonight. Problems going from 4/4 to cut time for "Dominick The Donkey"

I believe this is one of DougRNS s favourites.

Heh! I have a Tupperware story. Mrs. Badger and I were married in the early '90s, spent our honeymoon in Quebec City -- middle of winter. It was a magical time for us, but that's by the bye. We liked to spend some time sitting in the lobby of the Chateau Frontenac, having a drink and watching the goings on.

One evening, there was a Tupperware convention -- not kidding. Limos, party frocks, the whole thing as only the Quebeçois can do it. As we watched the spectacle, a lady of a certain age unsteadily descended the staircase into the lobby, clearly three sheets to the wind and then some. Floating above her was a bouquet of balloons, must have been a dozen of them. She proceeded to head for the main exit -- a huge revolving door -- at this point walking on her ankles, unable to maintain her balance on her stiletto heels. Mrs. Badger said "watch this!" and sure enough, Our Lady of Sore Ankles made it into the revolving door, but her balloons were then trapped, along with her, on the inside. She could not figure out how to make her escape. Finally, after much tugging and pulling and falling once or twice, hotel staff came to her aid, freed her balloons and the revolving door, and escorted her out and into her waiting car.

Certainly not the most 'special' moment of our stay, but a highlight nevertheless!

Did you travel through the quasi-blue blood City of Knoxville and not give a shout out to nearby Velo Vol ?

The adaptor, to play 18v Dewalt NiCd tools with 20v Li Ion batteries, came in yesterday while I was in the city. I tried it out this morning, and now have two normal drills and a hammer drill. That is too many, imo, but what to do? The new one is much lighter weight than the older one, so there’s that.
I also now have my first iPhone, a 2022 SE. I love its diminutive size. I have finally been freed from the constant harassment from google assistant; even turned off and disabled, it appeared, asking to be turned back on. And my new Assos cycling gloves. From Bike Closet clearance. Said company was not set up, a month ago, to deal with out of country orders. Even those to be shipped domestically. It became a major pain, just to put the order through, with the owner (the horror!) having to work on a Saturday, in order to make it happen. These both came in with friends from Colorado, who have second and third homes in the area. They are trying to decide whether to keep both or unload one.
I had a cold for most of the week and weekend, but got a short ride in day before yesterday, and maybe another one today. Dry season is such a busy time. Getting those projects done in the cool weather, that become so much more difficult after the heat and humidity returns.
