Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's really impressive is that you put that many miles on without pedals!!

nice bike!

Good catch. Yeah, thats what it looked like fresh out of the box upon delivery in mid February. It still looks that good except for some minor wear and tear and of course a set of Dura Ace 7800 pedals. It was tough the first 5,000 miles without them.

Thanks

My XL Aluminum Reparto Corsa. WIth the Mercatone Uno paint sheme.
The reason I love this bike: It is the first bike with a 11cm stem that fits. Usually I have to go at least 13.

I am admittedly an obsessive compulsive bike fanatic. It started with one, and then two, then the thought came into mind about owning bikes of various frame materials. Over the last few years, the addiction took hold and thanks to online auctions and discount web shops, my stable has grown (this does not include my MTB rides either).

And yes, I ride all of them. Some only get a few hundred miles a year on weekends, others get several thousand annually during the week. Favorite...? The Calfee is only 16 lbs. but I prefer the Airborne for its softer feel on day-long rides. The A&S and Festina climb like spooked squirrels and are really, really tight. The daily grinder is the red Specialized M2 (estimate 40,000 miles on it since '96) and fits like a glove.

Dura Ace = Acqua Sapone (Bontrager Aero), Airborne Valkyrie (Bontrager X-Lites), Calfee Tetra (Rolf Vigor RS), Festina SL (Ritchey WCS)
Ultegra = Specialized M2 (Formula), Univega Modo Volare (Keymet team issue)
105 = Univega 8-tube carbon (Ritchey WCS), Specialized Sirrus (bad weather bike)
and the LeMond Team Z, classic 7-speed Suntour group

Don't be jealous. Every new bike put me closer to living in the garage. My wife said, "No more" after the third. I pulled the "it was on sale" routine a few times, then a "I need a winter bike" for one, then a couple of "I was bidding and didn't expect to win" for another few, then finally I gave up and agreed to stop at this point.

She reminds every time she wants to buy something, "oh, I can't have THAT but you can have all those bikes...!". At parties, the with common response from others "you have only two legs, so whay all the bikes".

Trust me, I need them all to get away from the abuse. She also can't hide the fact that I lost over 70 lbs. initially before adding muscle back. I guess that means I'll live longer and healthier (just to hear more about it). Kind of a catch-22, hey....?

Roadie Rob,

I noticed each bike has its own pedal. Do you have a pair of shoes of each bike?(wouldnt be suprised, considering your beautifal bike selection)
Where did you get the money for all tehse bikes, someof them at least past 2000$

Hey hi565 - I appreciate the comments. As for the build costs, eBay has been a friend of mine along with a few local shops. Only me and my insurance agent know the full value (not even my wife, she would freak!).

They are all Look compatible pedals. The Calfee, Univega Modo, and A&S have Look 247's, The Festina has 396's, The Airborne has 357's, the M2 has 296's, the Sirrus has old Shimano 105's, the Univega carbon has 206's, and the Team Z has Performance Forte pedals (same as Look).

All those bikes and only 3 shoes - Shimano 214's, Time CX's, and Northwave Artic (neopryne lined high-tops for winter riding) all with Look black-fixed cleats.

Thanks, Mark - the sellor claimed it was a 56cm (same as the red M2). It fits more like a 57-58cm and with the stack of spacers, it rides much higher than all my others. I use this one for rough weather and also on the trainer in the basement (more upright riding position for "spinning"). In fact, it is covered in 1/2" of salt, sand, and grit from earlier today. Nasty...

I can't complain - the frame was only $46 three years ago...under $300 for the whole build.

That is a good one, I might have to steal that from you.

I am very jealous of your bike collection. I only have four and that includes my two mountain bikes.
