Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Adjusting indeed. I had to replace the left crank. The chain was on fine, but all the bolts were loose, and nothing was oiled. It was practically unused, which was good because its only problem was adjusting and rust, and not wear... Anyway, yeah it was a great purchase, and fast as well, if you look at my "Invisible advantage of the road bike" thread, and the front wheel spinning test I did.

This is the best tire boot I've found. Take an old tire and cut it 3 1/2 inch pieces from it. Cut the bead off of each piece and it will fit perfectly inside of a tire and it will not slide around. Extremely strong. I helped a guy finish the last 40 miles of a century with this quick fix.

Here is some pictures of my roadbike. (And one of the cx)

Frame : 2004 Airborne Manhattan Project 59 cm
Crank : Stronglight Pulsion
BB : AC Isis (Light and you can replace the bearings)
Handlebar : Kuota Viking
Fork : LOOK HSC3
Whhelset : AC 420 w/sapim cx ray
Breaks : ZeroGravity OG-04
Rear derailleur : Tiso Altore
Front derailleur , Shifters, cassette : DA 7800
Tires : Continental Force / Attack
Computer : VDO MC 1.0

The weight is 16.1, which is quite ok for a 1650g frame and clincher rims.

Just lovin' it

One question; one comment.

Question: what is that thingamajimmy on the right shifter cable? Looks like a gauge of some sort.

Comment: great looking bike and VERY refreshing to see components that you don't see everyday.

It is the Shimano inline optical gear display. There was a discussion on it a couple of months ago if you're interested.

Tiso Altore? What is that, some sort of Norwegian derailleur?

Nice bike, almost totally without parts from Shimano (or Campy). Someone in another thread wanted to know if it was possible to build a top bike without using a single component from these companies; the major obstacle seemed to be the derailleurs.

Dura-Ace in-line rear derailleur gear indicator. I have one as well, but didn't install it.

I wonder if SRAM will come out with a road version of their front derailleur.

After not riding for several years, I started riding again in earnest this past spring. Since my old, rather basic Trek was not much of an inspiration, I bought a frame and built it up with some Campy 10sp. components. Here is the result:

'04 Basso Reef (combination Easton Ultralight and Scandium with carbon seat stays, fork)
10 sp. Centaur, except the crank, which is Chorus.
Hand built wheels with Velocity Aerohead rims, Challenge Gara tires.
3T Forgie bar/stem
Koobi AU Chrono saddle
Wellgo MG-8 pedals (go ahead and laugh, but I wanted SPD - and they are cheap, light and work well)

Unfortunately the short days are here, but so far this is a great ride. I haven't weighed it, but it is light enough (the engine needs work). And thanks to Ebay and keeping an eye out for online specials, I was able to put this together at an amazing price.

After making do with an old steel bike with old 105 components (6 speed rear and down tube shifters) I have finally ordered a replacement.

I do really like my old bike but it is time for an upgrade.

I finally got it built! Took it for its first ride today and I can't tell you how impressed I was. I did a ton of reseach after I got hit and narrowed my field down to 4 choices, another Prince SL, Colnago C40, Colnago C50 and the De Rosa King. The Colnagos are beautiful bikes, but they are too plush riding for my tastes. The King makes the Prince SL seem noodley (and that Prince was one handlin' bike). This bike is stiff, man is it stiff. It has all the road feedback of the Prince, but dampens the high toned road noice like a dream. There is a 90 degree sharp corner on the American River Trail just west of the Folsom Dam Road that my Prince took well at 24mph, but it was pushing it. I took the turn today at 25.5mph on the King and felt like I could have taken it at 28 . I hit 33.5mph on a dead flat, never could break 31 on the Prince. If the center triangle was solid on this bike I don't think it could be stiffer, I'm just stunned with it's sprinting capability. Hopefully tomorrow it will see its first century. I have found a new love

I am a new member to the forum, but I have been an avid road rider for years. I wanted to add my bikes to the collection of great bikes everyone has.

1. Colnago active - Full Campy Chorus group with Carbon cranks, Velomax wheels. (The most comfortable bike I have ever ridden)
2. Colnago Ovalmaster Titanium - Full Campy Chorus group also, Mavic Helium wheels.
(I got such a great deal on this one I couldn't pass it up. The wife cannot understand why I have two roadbikes and both the "same".)

I know, I know... Because I own a Dura-Ace group and I couldn't afford to spend $2000 more to change groups and the rear wheel. Dare I say it, I like STI better than Ergo...

I am also incline to say the STI is better that the ergo system, but then the cables on the shimano is the one that is irritating.
