It will typically 'lift' any paint that has rust underneath it. So, on a section that has rust, but otherwise intact paint, it will not terribly effect the paint. If the paint is already lifting, it's probably going to come off.

Aluminum will not fare well in the oxalic acid. Better to do those parts in evaporust, which will still damage them long-term, just...less.

Fantastic! Great work and carpentry! Thanks for posting!

Don't forget ta treat the inside of the frame now that ya have it prepped. Just a coat of 50:50 Linseed oil and denatured alcohol will do wonders. Especially if your living near the salt water.

Of course you know this...

I don’t know what a rust bubble is but you can zoom in on post #1 and see that the OA gets at rust. Not for Aluminum.

Another one:

After OA but before any rubbing.

Good to know about aluminum, thanks. So it sounds like I don't have to remove the paint, the oxalic acid will get under the paint no problem?

Thank you for the pics! When I say rust bubbles i mean something that looks like this picture (not my bike but very similar rust bubbles). See them on the seattube below the lug?

The oxalic acid will remove the rust. The paint will chip off shortly thereafter since it no longer has the flakes of rust to support it.

Great, thanks for the confirmation. I think I'll go this route instead of brushing/scraping the rust off bit by bit, there's evidence of some light rust in the stays so might as well treat the whole frame.
