The problem with calorie counting for me is that it actually encourages me to eat out more. I can just select an item from the database and move on with my life. I would occasionally build recipes and put out the servings, etc. but it was such a pain. When it becomes a hassle, I tend to take the easy way out which ends up being less healthy.
I have a couple of small tweaks I am going to make and just go from there. I know what calories in and out look like for me because I have done the counting thing enough, so I'm not doing it totally blind. Just trying to cut some indulgences and concentrate on cooking more and eating real food.

Regardless, I would caution against the, "I know what the calories look like, I just need to buckle down," approach. It's half-assing it, tbh. Whenever I pause from counting, I stagnate, even if I think I'm being good and even if it's in the middle of riding season. The other benefit of tracking is that your macros (proteins, fats, carbs) are tracked, too. If you really want to get stronger while losing weight, it's a balancing act.

I was just thinking that calorie counting homemade foods sounds like a gigantic PITA.
How have you figured out your daily caloric burn accurately enough to make calorie counting effective? Do you just eat at a big enough estimated deficit to make being a few hundred calories off not a huge deal?

As far as calories out, there are plenty of activity trackers and smartwatches that are up to the task.
The problem is that the people that should be paying attention to both sides of the equation often think that one or the other is enough.

Vain, But Lacking Talent
Is cooking the problem or is tracking the problem? What did you use to track calories? I use the Fitbit app, I eat at home 80% of the time and haven't had a problem. If anything, it got easier as my personal library of logged/recent foods got filled out and I could scroll down and pick things off of the list and adjust quantity as necessary. I saved a few custom foods, like salads with multiple components, to make them a little easier, but for the most part it's just: protein, starch, veg, fats they may have been cooked with, any sauces or condiments, etc. It's literally a one minute task - driving to Wendy's is a much bigger pain in the ass (and the food sucks).

Now that isn't to say I won't revisit calorie counting when I hit the inevitable wall. It always seems like the pounds melt off at first and then you get that stagnant point where you have to do the real work. I feel like I'm probably still 20-30 pounds away from that stage. I remember when I was doing 100+ miles a week and eating absolute junk I was down to nearly 210. If I get to that point and the scale doesn't seem to move, then I'll have to get aggressive.

IT came in and replaced my computer. Since we're "off campus":, as it were, we don't flaunt our relative freedom in comparison to those that are on the network. I had to be relatively good, and limit my activity to actual work related stuff while he was there. I did get my pedals today, so the rings and pedals go on the TT bike tomorrow. The season is motoring towards a beginning.

datlas I think you can really get in the spirit of the season if you wear a mask in the exam room when seeing patients for the next couple weeks.
Tell them it's for your protection.

So I just had an interesting zwifting experience. Been feeling tired/crap all day and worried that I'm getting sick. Picked a route with a long flat into rolling hills and honestly felt like garbage the whole ride. Even went for a sprint section but went too early and blew myself up entirely. I go to end the ride and it turns out I scored my best 5 second, 1 minute, 5 minute and 20 minute power averages. I'm thinking my little stunt last Saturday might pay some dividends once I completely recover.

Happened to me throughout my running and cycling “career.” I’d also feel great and find out I was slow as ****.
