Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Estimate your FTP at the best cycling shape of your life. Take 70% of that or so and pop it, along with your weight and bike weight, in to a calculator for the grade of choice. For myself, at an 8% grade, I'm coming up with 5.8mph speed climbing, ~40mph descent and I'd have to cover a total of ~140 miles. That would be 14 hours.

Nope. The legs would revolt.
I could do Old La Honda maybe twice in a day. That leaves 20.5 more times. I suppose I could do it more than twice if I had a triple with a 30 tooth front, and a 34 in the back. It's nott THAT steep, but even with a 36x34 I'm spinning in the 75-85 rom range. If I were trying to Everest on it, I'd want to spin at 95-ish, even if it meant crawling so slowly I'd be in danger of simply falling over.

In talking about today's ride, I forgot to mention that REAL miles >>>> Virtual Miles.

Still, this is probably the most riding I've done in January in the history of ever, so, Yay for virtual miles. Strava says I've done 499, real and virtual. I'm not going to complain. Much.

A friend who has done many doubles and epic rides did repeats on the lower section of Glendora Mountain Road and he stopped when he got to 18,000 feet. He's not a light climber but quite a beast.

I'm not in shape to do it.

But I think ten years ago (pre-RA), had I really developed a taste for climbing, 18 hours could have been within the realm of possibility.

I am firmly in the camp that says, "Wow, that's amazing!" about Everesting efforts, while having absolutely no desire to even attempt such.

Was hoping to ride this morning. The rain stopped yesterday at around 7 pm but the roads were still soaking wet at 5 this morning. I don’t have a problem with wet roads, but VDOT coated the roads in chemicals before yesterday’s snow, not sure what those will do to my bike.

Went for a neighborhood walk in the snow with mrs datlas before work (WFH today). We only have about 4 inches of snow so far, but they are expecting another 8+ today.

You’ve got a few months to talk me into it if the owner doesn’t give up on the idea. He will only sail with people he likes, which narrows the already tiny talent pool for a potentially three-week race considerably.

Endurance events never interested me. Yeeech! Give me my fast twitch sports, please. Always hated the conditioning phase of track season, cross country in HS, don’t miss it, couldn’t wait to get to the real running.

I spent many happy hours doing LSD with my XC team mates back in HS.

All the more reason to do it.

Walks in the snow are magical in my opinion. I'm not generally up for walks but I've done a few this winter in the snow and have to say that they've been enjoyable.

Yeah, in my scenario, I was looking at a 1-mile segment and the times were conservatively based off of average climb speed and terminal descent. IRL, my power would sag and I'd fall over after a long day in the saddle, but still well short of the goal.

Ten years ago with lots, and lots, and lots of additional training.

....but maybe you're not underestimating the effort for you; maybe you're genetically gifted.

For myself, I know that if I'm in that ~100-mile/week shape, I'll be able to knock out an imperial century at the drop of a hat, but that I'll run the risk of hitting the ol' Limp Home Mode before it's all said and done, unless I ride very conservatively at the outset; it sucks to be pushing hard with achy legs, only to look down and see 150w or something. Last year, in ~200 mile/week shape, I was still feeling pretty fresh after a double metric. In terms of power, it was a little shy of the pace I'd need to Everest, and it took me 7.5 hours. I don't realistically think that I would have been able to do another loop at the same power.

I've said something similar to friends numerous times over the year. I tend to do most of my long hours type riding solo and many, if not most, of my friends don't understand at all.
