I do the same. Making adjustments in stem height is marginally easier with quills, but swapping out different length stems is basically impossible without a removable face plate. And if you need a quill stem that does have a removable face plate, your options are severely limited. My bike with the threaded setup is more for casual riding, so I'm not as concerned with making minute fit adjustments on it. For a bike used for more competitive/serious riding though, I think the freedom for easy adjustment with threadless is nice, especially considering that your desired fit can change over time. And IMO the right threadless setup can look just as clean and elegant as any quill.

one benefit i have noticed with a quill stem is if its not completely slammed it eats up some vibrations

Only on one side, though! When I'm setting up a new bike for myself, I usually leave the tape off for a few weeks whether threadless or quill stem. Even after stem height and reach is dialed, I usually try a few lever positions before happiness is found.

I pop in some Cateye or Velox bar plugs for safety's sake.

I really hate to contribute to further hijacking this thread from its true purpose but...

LesterOfPuppets answered TimothyH's challenge almost perfectly. Somehow I've ended up with nothing but quill stem bikes and whenever I am trying a new bar or stem I simply leave the tape off while I ride as long as it takes to set everything up right. In fact, those are the only times I've used any of my gloves over the past few years.

Yeah, its pretty easy to change a handlebar or a threadless stem - but I find it even easier to just loosen the single top bolt on a quill and pull it out with its attached handlebar then pop in a different bar/stem combo whenever I want to change. I don't know about anyone else here but I use a different length stem on most of my different handlebars anyway, so this works great for me.

However, all that being said - when it comes to the "why would a modern bike maker use 1-1/8 headtubes and threadless forks on their retro-styled bikes" question...I have to say I pretty much agree with Richard from Wabi. Considering the additional stiffness of 31.8 handlebars and the exponentially increased number of bars and stems available in modern configuration, why would anyone do otherwise? Speaking as a user of quill stems exclusively - I can state from experience that finding just the right handlebars and stems for my 1" theaded bikes can become quite a chore...

Not sure if this is well known but if you happen to miss a great sale at Nashbar, you can email them and they'll often give you the discount even a few days later. Just be nice of course in the email.

During the holidays I saw an email mentioned 30% off your whole clothing order and "3 days" in the title of the email. I was looking forward to ordering a bunch of outdoor/cold weather gear but foolishly didn't read the email carefully. I'm kind of neurotic (which I'm sure is shocking to many that have read my threads)......I'll really compare different items/read reviews, and see if I can get the best product in my price range. So for two days I've been slowly adding items to my cart when I have time to browse knowing it's a 3 day sale.

I go to place my order and realize no discount comes up. My dumbass didn't read the email correctly and it was "3 days of specials"...each day had specific items on sale and the 30% off clothing discount had expired 2 days ago.

So I send a nice email to Nashbar asking if there was any chance they would honor it since I had a brainfart and basically told them I wasn't expecting anything but it was worth a try...and also if they knew of an upcoming clothing sales again. Of course I never demanded anything since it was my fault (I do have friends that try that though...like they pretend to play lawyer and say something was "misleading" and "they need to make things right with the customer." I just hate that type of attitude.

Sure enough...I get an email saying they aren't told of any future sales but they will offer the 30% off my complete order for this one time as long as I call in the order. WOW.

So I called it in and ended up saving about $70 on my clothing order. I even had some bar tape in the order and they included that in the 30% off too.

Sometimes it pays to just ask (not demand), and remember you're talking to another human being which most likely deals with ******** all day.

So yeah....if you miss a big deal that you know could save you a lot of money, might be worth emailing them and seeing if they'll extend the offer as a one time deal.

Yep, that's what I'm going to do with Performance.

I bought a pair of bibs yesterday when they were $80. Today they are $64. When they arrive I'm going to go down to the brick and mortar store and ask for the difference refunded. I have to return another set which are too small anyway. My father used to say, "You don't ask, you don't get."

It helps to give they people you deal with kudos on Yelp when they do right. I did for two guys at the local Performance shop and they told me that the manager got a call from corporate the about my compliments the next day. Now everyone in the store is lovey-dovey when I walk in.
