Finishing tape for handle bar tape

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1

I’ve been doing it this way for years with good results. No slipping issues, including with tape that has no adhesive on the back. You can often get away without cutting the tape either by stuffing the tail into the bar end before capping. It’s a bit more forgiving this way if you need to re-wrap or reuse the tape for some reason before it is worn out.

The previous thread covered all these points.
June 2018: bar tape finishing thread

Yes, the BF search is lame. I use google search like this: site:bikeforums.net bar tape finishing

From that thread. Yep.

1/4" Automotive pin stripe tape. Cheap, tons of colors, doesn't move/bleed glue/etc and a roll will last you a lifetime. All I've ever used for decades.

It's really good tape if you can reuse it... You also know it's good if when it's done you never think about it again ...

Home depot sells 1/2" electrical tape in a multi color pack. It's what we use in the shop, but the 3/4" standard electrical tape works just as well. The trick is to not stretch the last bit too much, finish on bottom, and not to overlap the hbar tape. With some hbars you need to feather and angle the hbar tape to get a clean finish.

I'm not sure what silicone tape is but I buy self-adhering plumbers tape that bonds to itself as you stretch it slightly while wrapping it.

Can anyone provide a link to this stuff? I've never heard of it? Thank you.

Thanks CO_Steve. Very kind of you to offer. I wonder if I'll be able to find a Canadian distributor. Shipping from Rescue Tape might be the same, if not more to Canada damn it!

I'm not an expert in shipping to Canada, just assumed it would be a bunch. Like I said before, I've got tons of this stuff. If you want to pay the postage..

Yep. Except mine is black.

I cracked a carbon handlebar one time while 25 miles from home and I stopped at a hardware shop and bought some of this stuff. I wrapped the crap out of it and rode home. It was a few days later that I tried to unwrap it and it can't be done. I had to cut it with a knife and it was like semi-solid plastic. Been buying it ever since.

Its for sure at home depot, Canadian tire, etc. Its just self fusing tape- home repair stores will have it.
I use a couple wraps of electrical and then a few wraps of self fusing tape. Sometimes I stretch the self fuse tape and sometimes i keep it mostly unstretched. Havent figured out which is best.

I like to stretch the first wrap or two and then lighten up the finish. YMMV.

Not stretching the last wrap, independent of tape type, is a great piece of advice and easily worth .001 of the time I've wasted here.

It's been awhile since I read the directions but I think you're supposed to stretch it slightly to work properly.

Poor description on my part.

I have 2 types of this self fusing tape. 1 is really thin and 1 is thicker.
The really thin type is what i stretch a lot while applying it.
The thicker type is still stretched, but not nearly to the extent of the thin stuff. It just isnt as elastic.

Agreed that stretching the tape is good.
