When I am talking about how disk wheel covers are bad, I am only talking about the plastic and cardboard things that people put on for looks only. This excluses bike polo, in which they do actually serve a purpose.

I was thinking of trying to make a set of covers for a rear wheel just for something to try. I ride a lot on a circuit where I used to participate in a time-trial, and although it is no longer being held, I still time myself around it now and then, so it would be interesting to see if covers for the rear helped with the time around the circuit at all.

Actually, plastic spoke covers work pretty well and don't weigh much more, if any, than carbon. Covering the spokes gives a lenticular wheel, which actually outperforms a flat disk in a lot of real-world circumstances. Now, if you're talking about those bolt-on covers for BMX wheels, then yeah...

My only experience with disk wheels was picking one up that was on display at REI co-op in the '90s.
