Rode an easy 18mi yesterday with a friend as a final spin out before the gravel ride and he has a Tri tomorrow. Just got back before it rained a bit.

Longer event is tomorrow, but more unusual event was yesterday.
Took half a day off Thursday and drove up to Lake Placid for the Whiteface Uphill race, which got underway yesterday 5:30 PM. A buddy and I rode from town to the start, which was nice - eleven miles or so, easy downhill rollers - except we got hit with some rain. My buddy's girlfriend drove our "team" car, met us back at the start, and at the finish. The rain had stopped by the time the race started, but it remained mostly overcast, which was nice, because the first three miles were slightly downhill, and quite fast. It was humid, but fortunately the sun didn't come out to make it steamy after the showers, because it was fairly warm - pushing 80. However, about 15 minutes before the end: thunder. The last mile or so, it was an absolute deluge - blinding, and the road was like a torrential riverbed. My buddy made it in 1h13, and got to the top before it started coming down. I crossed at 1h27 and probably got the worst of it. It didn't let up until we were well on our way back down the mountain in the team car.
My buddy had planned to descend, but I think the deluge and his gf convinced him not to, and funny thing - I was sure I wouldn't, but going up, before it started raining, I thought I wanted to after all. Maybe next year. We both had a blast, and the gf (more of a triathlon/TT rider herself) may just join us. We definitely want to get more friends to join us. 23.4 miles, 3,946'

Well, I've not posted for awhile. Been stuggling to heal from the wreck in Feb still. But I think I'm finally back on track. Today I took out the Serotta CSI that I've hardly had a chance to ride. Made some changes to it yesterday and today was sort of a test. Did a little over 27 miles. It was so beautiful out though I decided to forget about pace and just enjoy the day. Took a lot of pictures too. It was a totally fun ride!

Sun: Tour De Heifer gravel ride in Vermont. did this last year and this year did not disappoint. they changed the route up a bit on the 60mi loop. 62mi 7600' climbing. Rode most of it as a group of 3 after the 25mi water/food stop. Perfect weather in the mid 70's and the dirt roads were mostly shaded. (though this made seeing bumps and pot holes difficult.. nothing like washboard or pot holes at 20mph) . one full off road section test my CX and Mtn bike skills to the limit with some washed out rock descending in the shade.

Friday: Quick out and back, post visit from in-laws. 21.9 miles, 1,398'.
Saturday: 4.8 miles to and from the grocery store, in the rain.
Sunday: Solid "group" ride of two! Plenty of wind, ~20MPH with gusts ~30, and it was the swirling kind so we only briefly had a tailwind. 41.6 miles, 2,231'. I've finally got my upgrades dialed in - last week, I changed out the 5600 FD, RD, shifters, and cassette for 5800. It was my first time replacing derailleurs, and was well worth the effort!

Always nice to see photos from jamesdak
As for myself, Saturday didn't ride as I was tired from the week before and might have caught a chill during the night. The roads were wet in the morning so I suspect some rain dropped by to say high in the middle of the night; anyways, some clarinase during the day took care of it.
Sunday, Joined a small group for what was meant to be a 70-80km ride out of town, and then hop onto the train back into town, but due to some GPS routing issues on the part of our ride leader, we did more "exploring" than expected and the initial ride was over 110km in length. Afterward we found the train wouldn't head back into town (some kind of upgrading exercise, we were told???) and our last stop was about 30km from our point of origin. Add another 20+ km because I also rode to and back from the meeting point, and I had an unplanned century ride for World Bicycle Day.

Got out for a 50k in the mountains with my wife. She rides with me quite a bit but it was the first time she had done any climbing. I was quite surprised that once the grade turned up a bit, she flew past me like I was standing still. She struggles to keep up on the flats at fast paces but in the mountains, she is a strong! She was waiting for the group at the top of all the bigger climbs. I guess it helps that she is tall and thin...

This reminded me of a few years ago when I was riding the Adventure Cycling Adirondack Loop (my wife drove support so not fully self-supported!). The route went over, I think some say the "shoulder" of Whiteface (not to the summit) but it started pouring while I was ascending. Fortunately, my wife sensed I might be getting in some trouble so she was waiting in the van on the side of the road near the highest point the route took us. Not knowing what to expect on the descent, what with the downpour and wet roads, I loaded my bike into the van and we drove down to Wilmington where our motel was. After seeing the descent, I started thinking I could make it down (albeit, touching the brakes the whole way!). So, I asked my wife to drive me back up to the point she picked me up so I could ride down and say I completed that segment of the ride. The guy who owned the motel was a former career marine and when he saw me loading the bike back up to ride down in the rain he told me I was crazy. Having a career marine tell me I was crazy has been kind of a point of pride for me

Got in a 60 mile ride in eastern Connecticut on Sunday. Really a perfect day on some roads I hadn't ridden on before. Picked up a cue sheet from a web site that has routes all around the state, and central Massachusetts, that people post. Beautiful rural country roads on a beautiful weather day. Stopped at a farm store to have some homemade ice cream. While sitting at the picnic table in front of the store, all of a sudden a bunch of cows that had "escaped" bolted out from the side of the store and ran through/around the picnic tables and on to the other side. Kind of a "running of the bulls" thing but with dairy cows. Won't say I wasn't nervous for a minute there, but kind of fun being out "in the country".

Saturday, the wind direction finally changed. I went for a 40 mile ride to Upper Tampa Bay trail. Sunday I was excited to ride out to Phillippe Park via the Courtney Campbell trail. However, the wind speed was about double what I was expecting. I decided to ride in a very unspectacular slow speed against the wind. It made the ride more enjoyable. Anyways, 45 miles. The weather is already very summery hot and humid.

Sunday - Back out again on another bike I'm sorting out. 25 miles at a faster pace than Saturday. This time is was a Jan De Reus, a small Holland builder. Nice little ride made with Reynolds 531c. Another nice day out in the valley. But the legs still are not back enough to handle 3 straight days of riding easily.
