Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday - Woke up this morning thinking it would be a good idea to do my first real climb since the wreck on the 33 year old Fuji Opus III. Within the first 1/2 mile of heading up the mountain I realized how stupid it was of me to do this on a bike with a 42T small ring. I did make it up but it sure wasn't fun. Anyway, a little over 51 miles today. 2710 feet of climbing. Sorry no pictures of the ride today. Broke my cellphone and still waiting for the replacement. But here's one of the bike I used today.

Bikes: Yes

The days are long here, and I've been riding almost every day. Rides of note over the past week:

Wednesday: Route recon ride for a possible local gran fondo. Despite a bit of rain and a short distance riding through a cloud, it was a fun ride. And, the roads were great! 58.1 miles, 2,827'.

Saturday: Ladies' weekend ride - this week's route had two not-too-bad climbs and two amazingly fun descents. Two of my friends broke the 50MPH barrier; I chickened out, but still got a good rush sustaining 40+ for a half mile. 50.7 miles, 2,215'.

Group 'B' ride (in my area A = slower, C = faster- go figure)

including 5 mi to start & back.

Forecast for hot so early start time. Ended up 100˚ by the later stages but not oppressive.

Attacked the hills in a variety of ways - standing, spinning, etc., for interest.

The freehub of one of our group stopped engaging, & call for ride was made.

60 miles, 2,600'

Sunday - Took out the Jan De Reus with some seriously tired quads. The first half of the ride was not good but I got it going for the second half. Beautiful cool, calm morning.

Tried out a brand new route on Friday and had my longest ride yet at ~110 miles with about 5k feet of climbing. I'm trying to get ready for the Seattle to Portland and finishing that ride made me feel totally ready! Might even consider doing the one day instead of the two.

Saturday, rain was in the forecast, but I got a decent, dry little ride in anyhow, just riding around on the TCX, and up to take a look at a house on the road to Nyack that came up on Zillow - just to see what it was like from the road: interesting. Saw some turkeys engaged in their rituals, and a deer munching on some leaves along the way. 34 miles, 1600'

Yesterday was the big ride: Discover the Hudson Valley. 101 miles, 5600' One of those big, super-organized events with routes for all levels - as little as 18 miles. Fortunately, start times were well staggered, so it was never crowded. The funniest/most luxurious thing was how they had something like nine possible rest stops on the 100 mile course (not all different, four were passed twice). Roads were SUPER quiet. Weather was good - got quite warm, but many of us got all the salty sweat rinsed off by a good, solid rain that came down at the end (last mile or two for me). I totally lucked out with my parking spot: the back half of the car was under a bridge, so I got to stay dry as I disassembled the bike, changed shoes, shirt & socks, packed the trunk.

Somebody turned on the summer oven in FL. Even though I was out by 7:30 am both days it was miserably hot. Saturday I wanted to go to Weedon Is., but ongoing bridge construction blocked me. Did my usual Picnic to Davis Is. instead for 40 miles Sunday really sucked. I rode to Philippe Park via Courtney Campbell trail. It is very exposed and the high temperatures did me in. Had some bad stomach and leg cramps. I did 45 miles though.

Bikes: 2019 Specialized Roubaix Comp Di2, 2009 Roubaix, early 90's Giant Iguana

58 Miles with 2700' and some good headwinds on the way home. Was more tired than I expected when I got home.

Great weather though (except the wind part) and saw a Coyote crossing the road not too far from me.

Saturday, I went out for a 76 mile magical mystery tour, make it up as we go along. 3300 feet of climbing and a just a nice day out.

Tuesday, I went out for a 30 mile solo ride, 1000 feet of climbing, complete with pub stop. It was a sweltering 33*C and some of the roads were melting, so that was interesting.

Yesterday was a 118 mile ride, with about 5000 feet of climbing. Not as hot as Tuesday, but still 27* C. A couple of roads were melting, but nearly as many as the day before. Two brutal days in the sunshine... But yesterday was my last mileage building ride for a 150 mile I have coming up in 2 weeks time.
