Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Went out yesterday for one of my favorite local rides which involves about 2,300’ of climbs and 36 miles and it turned into a ride of regret (Or in BF terms: Regert). Didn’t eat enough, pre-ride for reasons unknown (not wanting to admit I am a dumb ass). Only took one large water bottle with electrolytes even though it was the warmest day of the year. Packed along one gel and an all natural ‘energy’ bar consisting of fruit and nuts. I knew the legs did not feel right after the first few pedal strokes since I had a hard workout a couple of days before, but figured they would get with it after a warm up. No luck there.

Hill climbs start the route at 8 and 12% and found the HR way up and the speed down. Do you think that should have been a clue to turn around and go back? Went through my water bottle pretty quickly trying to get a little boost, but no luck since the legs continued to protest. Decided to down the gel which usually provides pretty rapid energy and it helped a little since there was a 1/4 mile 12% climb coming up. Made it up in the lowest gear and it wasn’t pretty, so decided to eat the bar too. Still no big result with a 10% 1/10th of a mile climb coming up. I am now at mile 26. Slogged up that and after three miles made it to a park with water for my bottle and a bench to sit on while looking at a nice lake and contemplate on why I even bothered.

After 10 minutes and downing a full large water bottle and refilling, took off again facing some nice downhills followed by a prolonged 5 and 6% climbs. Back down to granny gear and limped my way back up. The only good part of the ride was finishing with a 1.5 mile downhill with a top speed of 41.

As the saying goes, “Some days you are the windshield and some days you are the bug”. Not taking the day off made me the bug.

Pic of the lake where I pondered my dumbassery

Add me to that list. When I was in HS, my dad had a green 914 1.8. Not much power, but still a ton of fun to toss around. He loved that thing, and it's the only car he ever owned that was parked in the garage. I don't recall why he sold it. I've seen a couple of 914-6s around my area over the years, but they are a rare bird, indeed.

You know it's a hilly area when the lakes are on a hill.

Had one of those kind of days myself today. 128' up and 148' down over 15 miles. I suffered.

Well, the Canyon is still hooting. All the work I put in sanding the pads and cleaning the rotor with acetone didn't do anything. So I ordered new pads. Turns out Performance had them for half price so I ordered 2 sets.

You had me nervous because I bled the brakes on the Madone after changing the drive train and brake calipers. No hoot today, so now I can sleep at night.

By the way and speaking of hoots, Hooters filed bankruptcy.

I'd have thought they'd see an upswing in business in the current political climate.

Yeah, I have no idea how the pads got contaminated. I could have seen it with the front, where I was making Three Stooges-level screwups, but the rear went perfectly. I took the pads out, never touching the surface, put them in a baggie out of the way. did the bleed, cleaned up with isopropanol, and only then did I take the pads out of the bag and put them back. And they'd been nice and quiet prior to the bleed.

I did the same thing - put the pads in individual baggies labeled so they go back on where they came off. When I reassemble the Domane, it'll probably be my turn.

You'll likely never know what caused the hoot.

Now I'm imagining the bankruptcy trustee responsible for liquidating assets in order to maximize the amount available to distribute to creditors and some of the ebay listings that trustee is going to have to post.

(Ok that's probably not going to happen in a Chapter 11 but it's funny to think about.)

They are selling all of the company owned stores to a franchise owners group and claim Hooters is not going tits up.

I've only been to one once. People said the food was no good but it was fine for a burger/lunch place, albeit a little pricey.

Reminds me of last Saturday. I felt sluggish from the start and then worked about as hard as I could to try and hang on to the group. I was fried at the 25 mile break and couldn't recover enough to make any power. My legs hurt the rest of the way and I had to go to my lowest gear on every uphill. (68 miles and 3500 ft) The most I've hurt on a ride in a long time. Went out for an hour Wednesday morning and still felt like crap. Maybe some sort of sickness, idk. Went out this morning and almost felt normal.

Alan Kulwicki was sponsored by Hooters, and in 92, he was vying for the Cup championship. The final race at Atlanta Speedway was the Hooters 500, so my brother and I couldn't think of a better place to watch that race than at the only Hooters in the Denver area. It was a good race, Kulwicki won the championship, and the wings were not bad at all. The NFL fans were a wee bit cranky that NASCAR was monopolizing one of the areas, but they got over it.

The first time I went up Old La Honda this Spring (actually the first time in maybe 2 years), I felt fine on the ride to the bottom, but riding up it was a real chore. It felt like I was at the limit of what my legs could sustain for the length of the climb, and when I got to the top I was plumb wore out. My time was something like 35 minutes, including the 2 or so minutes when I stopped for a breather (haven't done that in years). I think I cut that whole ride down to a little over 50 miles because the legs just didn't have it.

The next week, I went up it again, 5 minutes faster, with no stop, and felt so good the rest of the ride that I did 67 miles that day.

Sometimes, you never can tell.

Have to leave my emonda in my car the next 2 days and it’s 90 degrees out. Anything I should be concerned about? I have to switch hotels tomorrow and will bring it in the room tomorrow night.

How do the rotors look? According to the mechanic page my rotors were toast too, as well as the pads were contaminated.
