Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Slip and bust your nuts no more!

Ok.. how many of you, honestly, have been say, at a light, one foot down, the light turns green, you stomp the road shoe into the road pedal, SLIP! WHAM! Bust your nuts on the top tube?

No? Ok fine, it happened to me, so now I have all mtb SPD shoes and pedals. But.. I found a roll of 3M safety-walk self stick today. Really sticky permenant adhesive. The tape's the stuff they put on staircase steps to prevent people from slipping. They have different grades, the one I have happens to be kind of like, a hard grippy version of the terry cloth on gloves.

Stick a wad of it on the bottom of your shoes between the heel and the road cleat and another wad on the underside of your pedal (if you have the class heavy assed Look pedals) and you're all set!

I can honestly say that in the six months I've been using clipless, that has never happened to me. Of course, I don't ride in the city, so I'm not in and out 40 or 50 times on a ride. I fell 3 or 4 times during my first month when stopping because I hadn't gotten sufficiently used to riding clipless, but I never pulled "the slvoid maneuver".

I ride a recumbent.

The possibility of slipping off a 'saddle' does not exist.

Is the pain and swelling that follows called the "slvoid Syndrome"********************?

Not quite the same thing but I had it happen once on my mountain bike. Chain suck while climbing out of the saddle.

It's been several years since I've done a "full slvoid" but I've had a couple of close calls.

Slvoid certainly seems to have an OC with the nether regions... God bless that boy.

Top 10 post of the year for sure.

That happened to me once and I left a group of smiling onlookers as I "hobbled" away. I was commuting home one summer evening through Old Town Alexandria for those familar with the area. Traffic was bad and the place was packed with people shopping and going to restaurants and bars. I became impatient and took off around backed up traffic. Just as I was sprinting through the intersection, I came uncleated, landed on the top tube Slvoid style, and slid along with one foot on the ground trying not to fall over. I glanced up to smiles and grins from drivers and pedestrians, all thinking I deserved it

I have WAY more top tube clearance than I need plus... (well maybe we should not go there!).

Ouch. Yes, I've done this. Except that I didn't land on my top tube, since my bike is too small for me because I'm 6'5" and they're all too small for me. Oh, the usefulness of riding with a really long jacked-up seatpost and stem... the top tube is lower.
Still, one time when I first built up the bike I was riding with Onza clipless mtb pedals (remember them? and quiver...) and both feet unclipped at once... and my nuts hit the top tube, even though it was a ways down there. Luckily no one was there to see. Unluckily, no one was there to give me CPR...
With Look pedals, I've never done this, except when my pedal retaining mechanism broke and my foot popped out while sprinting away from a stoplight. But my other foot stayed in, and I maintained at least a 2" gap between my nuts and the top tube.

I missed my pedal this past Saturday after stopping at a light. Carbon soled shoes are so unforgiving...once you miss there's no recovery. Fortunately, this didn't force me off the saddle as I hadn't made a full weight transfer to the unclipped side...but I was forced to try to build a little momentum by one-legged pedaling and found that it was really difficult!

I've had my Look cleats slipped on my Nashbar Z17 Ti pedals quite a few times already...but no nutcracker episodes (and hopefully none of that in my future)... The rubber on the cleat is just way too small to be useful. That 3M tape might be useful. Maybe I'll give them a try when I see them.

I've cut my shin pretty badly on the pedal after missing it a couple of times, and have smacked my crotch on the top tube or the nose of my saddle a few times, but I find that the pain is excellent for conditioning me so that eventually I DO learn to clip in on the first try -- a skill that could be the difference between sticking with the pack and being spat off the back in the first seconds in a race situation.

The worst is going from my commuting shoes (with tread) to my training shoes (with slippery plastic sole).

BDDT (Been there, done that) at a crowded intersection (Davis Square) no less while stomping on the pedals to sprint. Almost fainted from the pain and only thing I could think of was "God, if I faint in front of all these people it will be extremely embarrasing".
