Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bad Performance.com! Now what?

So I bought a trainer last Tuesday from Performance...

Or so I thought. I went through literally thirty pages of searching, putting in my info, 10% off code, etcetera, and finally got the 'OK - your order has been placed' screen.

Then I didn't get an e-mail. Figuring I might have put in the wrong e-mail address, I sent the Customer service a note on Friday. They asked for my address, and I replied within a half-hour. I still haven't heard back from them, so I called them today. Seeing as I really wanted the trainer for workouts LAST weekend, I asked for discounted expedited shipping. They told me if I could come up with a confirmation code, I would have a chance at getting discounted shipping. After an hour of looking through my cache that day, and various html addresses that are no longer valid at Performance, I'm sick of it.

I'm sick of Performance basically calling me a liar. I'm disgusted that they wouldn't immediately cover the difference in shipping - around $12 on a $200 order. I'm sick of the time I spent. I'm not giving any business to Performance or Nashbar any more; and Nashbar used to be my default go-to web store.

So now what?

Do I get the Blackburn Fluid Trainer from Colorado Cyclist, for ~160+shipping...
https://www.coloradocyclist.com/commo...238&TextMode=0

Or spend the ~$290 + sales tax and get the Cycle Ops 2 from my LBS?

That really sucks, did you get your money back from Performance? I've had a cyclops fluid 2 for about a year now and am extremely happy with it no problems what so ever. That being said, its a pretty expensive piece of equipment. I was in a similar situation last year when I bought mine, I was going to get it on ebay, but didn't want to wait, just spent the extra $40 at the LBS. I would do some research and find out if the blackburn is worth the discount.

Bikes: 2008 Kink Transition with upgrades, 2007 Haro Thread 1 with upgrades.

Probably support the LBS since it is better quality also. Also they can help you more.

I had that happen to me recently from Performance - I placed an order and it apparently didn't go through even though I got an email back. I realized it hadn't shipped and called them in a few days and they gave me the sales price and 10% off so I was satisfied.

In terms of the trainer, here is another option. Why don't you just get the best fluid trainer and get a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. Check out their web site and look at the design of the fluid chamber. This is the one fluid trainer that won't leak because of the magnetic linking system.

https://www.kurtkinetic.com/wont_leak.php

I bought mine a https://www.1upusa.com (fast and dependable dealer). I placed my order on a Sunday and the trainer was in my garage in 2 days ($275 with free shipping and a free Spinervals DVD). The KK will be your last trainer I bet.

My bike shop is 100 niles away, so I have dealt with Performance, but NOT anymore. I did not have good luck with Performance either. They would not even be so kind as to answer my e-mails.....even if their answer wasn't what I wanted to hear.....they SHOULD have answered. If that is the way they treat customers, they do not need me.

Thanks! I've just now found them on e-Bay as well for a little under that, but a few dollars is worth it to deal with a 'real' store.

Thanks - durability is something I'm worried about. The main benefit of the Cycleops is that I could be training on it tomorrow vs. next week; I was actually hoping to spend less than $200.

If you're a Team Performance member are they supposed to give you a 10% discount even if you use a coupon code?

No idea; and don't care to find out, as I'm not shopping there any more. Someone else might be able to tell you...

I thought they had forgotten to give me my points, but I just checked and it must have just taken them a while to post them to my account.

I did a big order with them last week and it was split up as 2 shipments. I got the first one on time, but the 2nd one was a day late. Guess which one I needed the most? Performance really has gotten worse and worse lately. Oddly enough, I've never had a problem with Nashbar yet.

moral of the story number 1: if you're on a schedule, don't order from performance.

moral of the story number 2: phone calls are quicker than emails.

Bikes: 06' Jamis Eclipse in the making.

My only problem with them is that they don't match another online competitor's price or LBS if I find it cheaper there. I have found that is where they lack. Also, shipping to my house with 2 day upgrade by being a member............gets to my house one day earlier than they show it should, which is usually the next day. I really can't complain myself I guess overall.

It's the older model, if they are selling the one in the photo. Not that it probably matters to the price only buyer.
FWIW...

i was a believer in Performance until they stiffed me twice with returns. One time I returned about 900 worth of stuff. They did not credit my account. I called them and they said it was sitting there unprocessed for 2 weeks.....suppose i did not follow up?......seems a little dishonest...

Then I sent back a couple of different orders in one package. They stiffed me big time on my points. Then they claimed some items were not in the box....which is impossible because the items were large and I remember them being packed in the box since they took up so much space.

I am very hesistant about ordering anymore. I may cancel my membership for now.

Plus they are building a bunch of stores here in TX which means I lose my tax benefit of ordering online.

I recently ordered three items from Performance and decided to return one for exchange. Now, I get an email showing that they have shipped the original three plus my exchange. I've looked the email over closely and it definitely shows four items shipped on the same day. Cost is not mentioned, so I don't know what's going on there or what the shipment will contain for sure until it comes.

Twice now, I've gotten double shipments from Performance and once, I never got a shipment after watching the tracking number results move all over the Eastern US and finally die out.

Performance is definitely a shadow of its former self 20 years ago.

I think they have tried to grow too big to be quite honest. They should have stuck to a eastern US business and serviced only the eastern seaboard states. That way they would be able to do what people expect, good delivery and better CS. You can outgrow yourself in business and I suppose that is what they did.

Think Cannondale and motorcycles, or Pearl Izumi and sneakers.

That would make it difficult for me to order from them.

Online ordering is going to occasionally have hiccups. You have to use a little common sense.

Always print your order confirmation page - doesn't matter if you're ordering from Performance or any other online retailer. If you don't have an email confirmation in a short period of time (10-15 min)- CALL the retailer and check to see if there is a problem-- especially if it's something you're needing by a certain date. If there is a problem you have the printed order confirmation page as backup and you can place the order over the phone if needed.

Performance is doing a horrible job compared to what it used to do. It has become the faceless discount box of cycling. While it still occassionally has deals that are killer, for the most part I can find anything major at a cheaper price somewhere else.

Luckily I now live close enough to not have to have items shipped to me otherwise I would probably no longer be a customer. All I have to say is that it's almost March and I haven't even spent enough there to justify my team membership yet. Sad. Not like me at all. I just have no desire to go there anymore....
