Paramount Track bike... a new addition to my stable

First, I need to thank Stan aka 'Scooper' for helping me out with this. Without his wisdom I would have been lost.

A month or so ago I replied to CL ad for a Schwinn Peleton which I purchased. The owner is a life long cyclist and enthusist who at one time owned 16 bikes betweem himself and his wife. I asked if they wanted to sell their Paramount track bike and they said it was something they hadnt considered.

Earlier in the week I e-mailed them and they said yes, make an offer and I did. Make an offer? WTF do I know about Paramount track bikes? They proceeded to look up the only Paramount track bike on ebay, needeless to say it was considerably more than my offer and more than my meager budget allows for. I PM'd Stan to get a 'market update'.

Based on what Stan had to say I counter offered and they accepted. I picked it up today....

I dont know what stock specs are but it appears to fairly original. Everythings Campy, including the cog, with Weinmann rims and a Cinelli bar/stem combo. One of the wheels has had the spkes replaced as one has Unions (cloverleaf) and the ohter had Robergels? (E).

On occasion I read posts inquiring about the differences between Campy 'Strada' and Pista' cranks. The differences are clearly visible in the pics.

Is that fork crown drilled?

Either way, you're a lucky bugger! Welcome to the proud Paramount owners club

I wouldn't put that drilled fork crown in the minuses category. I wouldn't ride without one, and in this case, someone else took care of the sacrilege for you

Beautiful machine. Good thing it ain't my size

From: My response would have been something along the lines of: "Does your bike have computer controlled suspension? Then shut your piehole, this baby is from the future!"

Bikes: to many to list

I didnt think I could hate someone this much! OK....I feel better now. Beauty of a bike! If you should decide to sell let me know ASAP as it appears to be my size!

I've since found out that a drlled fork crown was a factory option in '74.

As long as I'm bumping this up....

Are the lugs supposed to be outlined on my bike? Perusing through pictures it appears most are not. Was it a color specific feature?

Jim, that's a really nice example. Congratulations.

I don't know about the lug outlining, but I expect the bike could be ordered that way from the factory. In any case, the outlining looks like a professional job.

The 1974 P14-0 catalog page is HERE on Bob Hufford's SLDB website.

Stan, thanks. Would you know if the wheels were laced 3x or 4x?......Both have been rebuild so I cant tell. I have shiney new db DT's for either 3X or 4X ready to go with a nice pair of Fiamme reds to replace the existing mis-matched rims.

Jim, I'm sorry, but I don't know. The 1972 and 1975 P14-0 specifications both called for the same part numbers for the built-up wheels (85-615 for the front, 85 715 for the rear), although the part number for the rim changed between '72 and '75. My hunch (and it's only a hunch) is that they're laced 3X.

Here's the built-up wheel page from the '74 Parts and Accessories catalog with a description of 85 615 and 85 715:

Stan thats perfect!!!! I have a box of 1.8mm DT's that I'll lace 3X. 1.8mm = .070!!!
