Trek 660's
Anybody notice that the recent Trek 660 that sold for I believe $655.00 on eBay and another one is $405.00 with 4 days left and hasn't hit reserve. It seems that Treks are really starting to go up in price. I'm searching Craigslist and they seem to sell as soon as they are offered. I've owned two over the years and sold my last one to a friend who wanted to take up cycling, guess I should have kept that one. I need another one and the prices have really seemed to have escalated. I'm looking for preferably a 1984 but will consider a 1985....anybody have one they want to sell cheap.

Wow, that is surprising on the $655 deal, given the mishmash of parts on that thing. The one at $405 has some Record and Super Record at least. The other one currently at $81 also has some slightly more upscale parts, but it's still a mongrel.
I've got an '85 560 with full Suntour Cyclone I'll sell you for half the price, and the Cyclone will far outperform that Campy stuff! Problem is, it's a lot taller than that $655 660.

I have one, ('85 Green 660) and after seeing this I think I will keep it for a long time considering that I might never find another one at a decent price. I got the frame, fork and original Stronglight headset on CL 6 months ago for $100.
The ebay seller of the $655 bike is local to me and lists a lot of bikes on CL. Mostly $225 mid level stuff. Always that same background too. He made a good sale on that 660.

Here's a bargain!
I just recently got into the Trek thing. They seem like really nice bikes (I did notice someone bashing them here on the forum a while back but I didn't see why).
Last year I was flipping $25 Raleigh 3 speeds. This year I've made a little money on Treks and kept a nice one for myself.

Thanks for the replies. I should have never sold my '84 660. It was a beautiful bike and looked like new. I picked up the '85 after I got my De Rosa as a backup bike and to use on my trainer. A friend wanted it and I let it go because it was a little rough and I was used to seeing nice 660's for $200-300. But they are getting harder to find or they've been turned into "Fixies". I love my DeRosa but miss having a Trek around!

Great, another opportunity to post pics of my, purchased then and still owned, 1989 Trek 660. IMHO, the 80's Trek racing bikes were on par with the Italian frames of the same era. There were several teams that rode Treks. Obviously, Trek did not have the history of the Italian companies and, as a result, Trek's steel bikes were only in the game for a short period before frame materials shifted to Al.

I think I read that the 7-11 team used Trek 170's. oh and thanks RFC for posting yours and rubbing it in!
Though I'm partial to the red and yellow 660's. Anybody else have a 660 they can post?

Steel Trek road bikes have gotten really hot around here. I wish I had the steel Treks I sold in the last year, I could get 25% to 50% more for any of them. Just picked up a 1984 Trek 520 yesterday. We'll see how it turns out.
I predict that in a couple of years, we will all reminisce how we used to be able to buy high end vintage steel Trek road bikes for $600. I bet pricing will continue its march to $1000 and then beyond.

Here's mine. Some may have seen it before. As mentioned I just got the frame 6 months ago then proceeded to spend as if I printed money on a few choice parts although the Ultegra RD was free so I didn't stress over the long cage and the Dura Ace FD I won for $10 on the bay. A bit of a Frankenbike but it's all Shimano and Japanese. Oh wait, Mavic rims and a Sram cassette. The 9 speed bar ends shift super nice and couldn't have set them up without reading the how to on BF. And looking at some pictures.
The geometry is so tight there is a little toe overlap. I do wear a size 12 1/2 SPD shoe.

Hi RFC.....those were True Temper, not the 531 right?
@ TMH657 very nice looking 660!
@work101 I agree and I think we are starting to see the start of it. Try to find a decent priced vintage Trek anymore.

The 7-Eleven women's team rode 170's, not the men's team.
Trek's used to be very underrated. Now they're on the verge of being overpriced in some cases. They don't all have the same mojo, IMO. The early hand silver brazed ones and some of the later top end ones are more special. Others were not handbuilt (automated brazing) and used plug-in contruction or lugs that were cast into the headtube piece. They all tend to perform well and were well designed.

Yeah, like my '78 TX 500. It's a sport touring geometry, unlike the 660, and fulfills its purpose well. The Ishiwata 022 rides nicer with less frame flex than comparable 531 frames I've ridden in this size (60cm). Though not perfect, I'm impressed with the finish work on this frame compared to some of the later Treks.

It's not quite a 660, but here's the '85 560 I mentioned. Untouched since I received it in trade from BF member Little Darwin. It's got a fairly complete Suntour Cyclone branded group, minus the hubs, bottom bracket, and chain, and if they ever made such a thing: the seatpost, headset and stem.

Nice looking 560 JYB.....but that I bet that is too tall for me. That is probably a 33" or 34" standover. Love the early 80's Treks and your 600 is a good looking bike Mark.

I still have my teal/magenta 660. I was a great entry level race bike. Ultegra group and the aero rims were nice. I upgraded to a Colnago after a few seasons of racing but I still have the Trek. Hard to part with a first "serious" bike. Didn't think it was worth much...but now...hummm....the color was the second option and not as many were produced....RARE!! $$$$$!!! lol
