I've given up on trying to figure out the right slack. I'm even using a half link. First the chain will be way too tight like a steel rod...then I'll push the wheel forward just a hair and think it's perfect. Then I'll take a pic and all of a sudden it looks too slack in the picture. I can never get it right.

Is your issue caused by varying tension as the cranks move? Although a bit frustrating at times, I find it is a worthwhile excercise to try to center the chainring on the crank spider.

I tried Sheldon's guide but came to the conclusion I'll never win this battle.

I'll just write a note and tape it to the frame...
"If the chain pops off and I happen to die, please put on my gravestone:

Looks like a fair bit of slack on that chain. Fixing that would give more clearance in the back.

More clearance for what? Chain tension looks fine to me.

Huffandstuff 05-05-16 10:01 AM

I think the internet is the only place that people really care about chain tension.

If you lose a link from the chain it'll give you enough room left in the dropouts to tension it.

Also get some bar tape

I don't need no advice or steenking badges! Clipless pedals and better saddle go on tonight. And tires, forgot about those.

My new ratty Samson. Paid very little.

Previous owner road it in a city for the past 10+ years. Lots of wear in the usual U-lock spots.

I repaired the Flite...just some stitching and Shoe Goo.
Figure I'll ride it into the ground. Was thinking about a full repaint but just love the chrome under the paint.

28mm Conti GP BARELY fits in the rear. 2-3mm clearance in spots. Think I'll try to squeeze in a 25mm GP in the front since the 23mm Gatorskin is about dead.

Sweet bike. I never know what brands/models to look for when I try to find used bikes or frames. This is exactly what I was looking for before I gave up and bought new.

Honestly the only time chain tension is going to hurt you is if your chainline is off and it is super loose. I usually ride with my chain pretty loose on my bikes.

Was just taking the piss. I know he's very particular about the least amount of clearance.

Nothing says classic track bike like squeezing 25/28's.

Yeah, but he doesn't want to increase clearance. :p

I have a rear tub wheel with a 22mm already on it. My next purchase will be a front tub wheel also with a 22mm tire.

For riding in the city with crap roads/debris, I'll stick with 25mm clinchers. The 28mm on the back is only there because it's an almost new tire (I got for cheap) and I want to at least get some use out of it.

seau grateau 05-05-16 07:09 PM

k.
