Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I think the new technology takes a while to trickle down into the SS/FG world. There really isn't much of a performance market with single-speed bikes aside from track/fixed crits and the few weirdos who do single-speed cyclocross.

You could do that too, but will probably get more power with spds. They are also very easy to unclip if the tension is set correctly. Plus, they are walkable too.

I think that we're likely to see older tech on SS bikes, for several reasons. First, SS is just a good use for old parts. The parts that deteriorate and are hard to mix and match, are the derailleurs and shifters. SS is what's left.

Second, older frames are more likely to have horizontal dropouts. Third, there was a time period of maybe a few decades when there was very good interchangeability of parts such as BB's, so you're more likely to find the parts for a SS build in your bins if you start with a frame from that era.

I love the theme of high quality, low cost bikes which compromise the SS world. Really cool old tech thats old but still goo

Indeed. I also have a penchant for the "stealth" bike -- a finely tuned machine hiding in plain sight because it looks old and beat up.

I wouldn't call my SS finely tuned, but the bottom bracket is probably older than me and still spins, so that's cool.

Its cool converting bikes to ss too since it lets you re-live good times with your bike, and also recycling. I have a '85 Schwinn Letour with 6900mi on the original drivetrain that I got second hand off the curb. After putting 6900 mi on it, converted the drivers to ss/fixed, and its still going. Had to finally replace the square taper bb this year due to lots of pitting on the spindle, but now it runs good as new.

Here ya go...Sram's got it a little more realistically priced:

He just lowered the price to $20 for the 3x crankset, thinking I should jump on it but it's always an awkward conversation with the wife, that is, buying parts for bikes I do not yet own!

There are a lot of outboard bearing track and single speed cranksets on the market with varying price tags, the Sugino 75 was just one example.

Steel is the way to go for this.

A vintage frameset with tighter geometry made with higher end columbus or reynolds tubing.

Basically every messenger bike. The longer you stare at it, the more excited you get.

Bikes: Kona Unit, Kona Kahuna, Kona Dew DL, Scott Big Jon, Trek Checkpoint ALR4, KHS Urban Soul, Haro Team Issue, GT Force Expert Carbon, Bernardi Quadra.

Picked this up about a month ago, its a 2012 Team Issue bike, new old stock from the local importer.
I did get wider / taller bars and better pedals but I did not take any pictures yet.

Depends on who you ask. It would do absolutely nothing for me.

Photos only, no riding allowed

(I'm joking, just wipe them down every now and then and use care while locking up)

Timothy, nice Pista. That exact bike and size was my first "real" track bike back in 2004. It was a good bike Charlie Brown.
