Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Hey! My brother-in-law is a real live ranch hand who rides a horse, ropes cows & brands 'em, smokes Marlborough reds, rodeos, and writes cowboy poetry. He's like 6'6", skinny as a rail, handlebar mustache, huge ass buckle, and about 5 dogs. The man's never worked outside the Dakotas, Nebraska, and Kansas.

So piss off, Ken Cox! If I ever meet you, I'll carve your spleen out with a pie server!

I'm gonna stick my fingers in my spokes! Can I?

By the way, I just talked to a former pro racer, and he says we're all poseurs because we didn't train in Flanders in February in the 1940s and 1950s, not were we there at the turn of the century when Major Taylor was hitting the boards, and we most definitely did not train for our upcoming seasons on Div I/Pro Tour teams using fixed gears either.

Nobody "owns" the rights to the fixed gear bicycle, so go worry about something else.

So out here on the real frontier we have real cattle ranches and people who dress up as cowboys every day as part of going to work.
Some of the cowboys have really authentic costumes and stuff on their very authentic horses.
They even go to rodeos where they can show off their cowboy costumes and their ability to ride a horse.
Although one could say that they represent the last real cowboys on the planet, they come accross as posers.
I think some of them do it just for an excuse to dress up in a cowboy costume.
That's it Cox. I've saddled up with some Cheyenne, Medicine Bow, and Chugwater cowboys and we're coming to your town to punch your girly poseur Oregon faces in.

I had considered making my own spoke cards for the reason that I do not like putting stickers on my frame. I was going to take cycling stickers I liked (one less car, I hate ur suv, etc.) and make spoke cards. I have one spoke card in my wheels now and people always look at it when my bike is parked so I thought the pro cycling messages may do well.

I think coke is the status symbol there now, and pot is still the standard currency, they should have kids pay the cafe lady in pot instead of cash, it'd be easier for the students. 2 ATM on campus vs every other person being a 'dealer'.

so i have another odd msgr/poser status symbol to bring up and bandy about (and i was talking to mcatano about this the other day)..

what's up with the really tiny skinny kids with HUMONGOUS mess bags that cover their entire back from their necks down to their arses and stick out on the sides? they are usually carrying nothing and have patches all over. i call it the turtle syndrome..

anyone know what i'm talking about? anyone notice or care?

mmmm. As someone whose 5'9" and, for some ungodly reason, loves to carry around everything plus the kitchen sink around with him in his bag, I would say the reason is this: you can't change the size of the stuff, and you can't change the size of yourself... but you CAN change the size of your bag to accomodate everything and anything you can possibly stuff in it. As long as it doesn't affect riding ability, I don't see any problem with it besides maybe looking a little silly. Whatevs.
Maybe for some, they don't feel like a real posenger unless they have a giant size, "real" messenger bag (for those oversize packages and tubes )

i don't think real couriers spend half the amount of time being concerned with this BS as most of you do on this forum. most of them are, you know, working.

Heh don't ask me. My messenger bag's a medium sized timbuk2 bag, it's big enough for my pants, shirt, underwear, plus my lunch, and maybe a sweater and an extra shirt. There have been days where a large messenger bag would've been useful for like, stealing my 40lb work station and bringing it home.
Or hauling the set of irons that my coworker gave me home. For those days, I save it for friday when I take the subway.

Does this count as a spoke card?

maybe they're a new breed of messengers that keep their weight down so they can sleep in their enormous bag, like a turtle. Saves money not having to pay rent and utility bills.

HA! Are we back on the mess bag/poser connection. If so I found a way to make sure everybody knows I actually ride a bike. I leave the blinkie on the bag and actively blinking when I sit in the bar or at work or at the bus stop with my bike.

Well if your other cats don't believe you, you need to throw them in your mess bag, drink a lot of beer and then go riding through opposing traffic at night with them in the bag...that'll learn 'em.

this thread has had be cracking up all day long. as the flaming lips say, "what is love and what is hate? and why does it matter?"

I'm just disappointed that no one has expressed excitement over my idea of skid-distance fantasy baseball competition.
