Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? you guys should be glad of even having 'poser messengers' on bikes (fixed wheel at that!) where i live the only fixies on the streets are the couriers. i have a sticker(unpeeled) stuck in my damn spokes. is that ok? its all muddy from these watery ass irish streets. it says ride agaisnt the machine .bike liberation front . woot

it doesnt matter what you stick in your damn spokes as long as you ride a bike! for real. dont lose sight of the true aim here. the people who do the alleycats, the people who ride brakeless track bike in street, the people who work 9-6/7days as a courier and break every light and stop sign will always know that the spokecards they almost died getting racing in some crazy ass alleycat are real. so ... who frickin cares .let the posers pose and the riders ride i say!

I wonder if there is like a basketball message board somewhere with a thread about all the posers walking around with Nikes and basketball jerseys and whatnot.. Or what if we all got worried about these hipster/possenger problems, and started dressing "normal," would the middle-aged/upper-middle-class guys start *****ing on their forum about how we are posers because we are walking around in their khakis and polo shirts.. Hmm.

I love this!!! Okay, so here we have myself, a roadie (with gears!), venturing into uncharted territory to find this awesome thread. I've actually been reading the whole dang thing. I got a bit bored of the "is it okay to wear team jerseys" in the road cycling section and thought I'd go for something new. Wrong! It seems everyone on a bike is posing! I had no idea what an alleycat is but have surmised that it is a race by messengers in the city through traffic, correct? You guys are nuts. At least you have a better sense of humor than the spandex nazis! I didn't realize there were so many rules to cycling. What should I wear? What should I put on my bike? For the last week I've been constructing this badass aero pink horse head (yes, it's a Campy equine) to mount to the front of my drop bars so I can hit 60 on a descent! Please don't copy me posers! What does this have to do with anything? I don't know, I've just been typing whatever junk keeps flying past my eyes. Tea anyone?

Everything old is new again. No one invents anything. Everything is a copy of something else. Just do whatever the hell you feel like, be nice to other people, and hug your mother.

Oh, and roll 'em high, posers! Damn, snap!

peace,
sam

On the job today, the bike i parked next to had a Metrocard folded/attached to each spoke on both sides of both wheels... obviously not a spoke card from an (fake) alleycat, but a "spokecard" nonetheless. I don't think this is at all an issue, as I feel that the rider wasn't attempting to convey the idea that these cards were the product of alleycats. But if the "hipster bike" in question was attempting to replicate fake alleycat spokecards, then I kinda have a problem with that, but if its just non-(fake)alleycat cards, then who cares?

You guys...I'm sure.

Who really cares about appearences except for the people that invest so much time in their appearences? What is this? The natural extension of the high school clique?

I feel you about the spoke cards. The whole earned thing, but imitation is flattery, and maybe people just like the pictures. Live and let live. Don't hurt me none.

Well. . .I did not read *every* post on here so I may have missed it. But the only "race card" I ever got from an alleycat was a card from a Tarot deck. Not that I have been in many lately so maybe some cool art school dropout pimped out a card in photoshop. But as I know them you can get a whole deck of "race cards" at Barnes and Nobel or other. . .

I've taken the liberty of making up some "authentic" alleycat racing cards. Here is an example:

Back in the day (read: 1980s), I lived on the playground playing hoops most days and every night. If you showed up in my neighborhood with a pro jersey or sparkly new Converse Weapons (the Magic ones) you were considered a poseur. Same *****, different crowd. Of course, like everything else, if you could back it up, nobody gave a damn what you had on.
