Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? All you posing anti-hipster hipster anti-poseur poseurs are funny.
And I thought roadies were concerned about their image.
Now I know why chrome is so popular again.

Human nature is the same. It just expresses itself a little differently sometimes. The same "Elitists" with the spoke cards will later become the guys wearing flashy team kits riding their carbon fiber colnagos when they are older.

They are in fact the same exact person just a different points in their life. When they were seven years old it was Pokemon cards they were collecting. Only those that "earned" the Pokemon cards during "battles" were the cool kids and they made fun of the kids who bought their cards.

ROFL....this was a very entertaining thread. Thank you for giving me insight on what these cards really mean.

Roadies try to do this **** to other roadies all the time (I even read threads in the road forum criticizing others for not having the right socks. There are cycling specific socks you need for real...LOL). It's the exact same thing in the SS/FG world only under a different guise.

Hey, I was wondering if you guys could help?? I bought some (used) cards on eBay and tried to put them in my wheels but they keep falling out, I think my spokes are too loose. Also, my wheel is "Taco'd" or at least that's what the guys down at the burrito place said. Can I trust them? Anyway, there's like a 6mm gap between the spokes from where the ice cream truck hit me (no brakes). Did I buy the wrong size cards or what?

You mean Pokemon'. My brother played with them. I was too old also.

There was a lot of snobbery going on with that too amongst those little kids like, "I'm a better Pokemon master than you...I won my cards where did you get yours? Did your mom buy them for you?"

Funny stuff.

I avoided this thread for several days now. However, I had to look.

I really have never understood this problem. I don't care about anyones bike when it is locked to a post or a rack. If this person could get on that bike and out ride you then he is not a poser. If the skills are there they are there. If not, they are not. This is the truth, if you can't ride but have the bike you are posing. It doesn't matter if you race, or are a messenger ect.

so unless you can hit 30 on flats and then skid 350 feet with no hands, you're a poser?

I was biting my "fingers" for so long. But, now you said it!
Thank you. Skill is the only way to resolve the poser/no poser question.
Being or not being a poser is about the rider not the bicycle (although I too appreciate a beautiful rig).

We all start somewhere. I get schooled all the time, but that is the a way to get better. Most people that are really into something for the love of it will get better at it. They put the time and effort into it with passion. They will be or become better at it than other people who are in it for other reasons. This passion and love manifests itself in skill.

I was once told by a person riding their fixie backwards up a steep hill: "Remember, the heart of your bicycle is in the center of your rear wheel!" Maybe not everyone would be impressed by this - I certainly was blown away.

I know you're new here, but at least 2 members who post regularly in SS/FG are actually old pro racers (not me, unfortunately), not young punks like you presume. Of course, I haven't seen either one of them on this thread. Which should tell us all something.

I have a lot of respect for real track racers.

A Bike is a Bike. If you enjoy the fixed gear for what it provides that's good. I don't think whether or not you are a poseur should be determined by how much skill you have, but rather what is your intent.

If you ride because you enjoy projecting an "image" then you are a poseur no matter how much skill you have. If having "earned" spoke cards on your bike matters then you are posing for recognition, but you are a poseur nonetheless.
