Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

SS Triathlon- what could've been

Sunday's triathlon was great- I single speeded the bike course on 52-17- what a mistake!!!!!!!!!!
I should have gone and spent 16.5 on the 11 tooth freewheel the day before. I placed 29th on the bike out of 337!!!!!! I am banned from running for a bit by my DR. so I had to walk the running leg, but I did it in style dressed in my chili pepper costume! My pics are too big to attach, but I think it is worth the 2nd try. I got an awesome posedown, Like a true poser would, with my single speed in my pepper getup.
If I ever run again, I think I can be on the clydesdale podium. the c'dale winner was right near me in the swim when I was gramaw stroking, and I beasted him on the bike.
BTW, for a course with 260 feet of ascent over 20 miles, single speed is a super advantage. I ride it all the time, and the hills are nothing. I call em woop de doos. If you only need to stand up and make 10 revs to get up it, it ain't a hill. but on all the hills, I could hear people's derailleurs clanking and spanking, and I simply stood up if I needed, or just pounded down and powered up. the only sound on my bike was that noisy bottom bracket with it's 3 month old bearings.

Didn't you do one like this before (minus peppersuit, of course)? Mad props, nonetheless. A tri with a 20-mile bike is nothing to scoff at. Can't wait to see how you fare when you can run!

The peppersuit gives all the ladies girl-*****s.

I did a century ride a few weeks ago.
I flippin love single speed riding, except coming uphill to my house! It makes something that you know you can do, maybe even easily, and adds a lot of challenge to it. I know I can ride all the roads around here, but can I ride them if I only have one gear.
You should have seen me getting my freak on ,literally, as the hot pepper.

dude, that's so great. I don't know why, but I always imagine triathalons as being really tight-assed and uber-athletic. I'm glad to see there's room for fun.

In my former life, I spent all my spare time in the tri-circuit. Although the elite triathletes are uber-athletic (and talented), most triathletes (of all skill levels) are very down-to-earth and just out to enjoy themselves. Much like marathoners. Not at all like the 'out to kill' attitude of the pack-riders i've been exposed to.

How can people who spend hours in the ocean daily NOT be laid-back?

They are equipment hounds though; i certainly didnt fit in in that respect.

Don't get me wrong, I am a competitor, but I got this sorry ankle right now that means no running or jumping or sudden movements. I went for it on the first 2 events.
I really was thinking about wearing the pepper suit for the bike, but I would have passed so many people in it, I would have felt like a jerk. But I might be more of a jerk for passing in my speedo. who knows.

Another thing that was a super moral victory. Bustin people on 2K$+ bikes, ripping past people with aero bars, ragin uphill while the $1000 gruppos are shifting slower. Knowing my bike was 80 on ebay, 110 saddle, $5 tape, 60 in tires, rear wheel setup cost 140 with 2 chains. there's 5$ in new bearings in it too.
I've always had a hard time fitting in, When the "athletic" kids would see me party, they are appalled, when the partiers see me out doing my sports thing the day after late nighting, they are appalled. You can do it all.
In fact, I am not sure the SSFG forum is a place that gives a poot about all this nerdy competition stuff. I was hoping they could appreciate throwing the SS in the face of bike snobbery and elitism. Only 28 rode faster than me

I'm a (relatively) slow swimmer, so I usally had plenty of opportunity to enjoy passing the masses in budget-mode (ss, no lycra).

Great placing, congrats. Hopefully you can run next time...
