Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

?? I never got a page, did you put in your number after the "beep beep beep"? Me and username: Stickyfoot chinatown bus'ed it this morning, did the first 5 or so, skipped the Roosevelt Island checkpoint since we were staring at the 59th St. bridge and didn't want to get blown into the water, and then went to the 1st Shearith before saying f' these headwinds we're going home. I think I have the Brooklyn stuff on lock, and the other stuff is just around Manhattan, so I'm not too worried.

I'm straight up assuming we have to do the checkpoints in order, but there was some confusion around this, someone in the know want to clarify?

My gf's sister has a small yacht but having a bunch of guys cramming onto it with bikes is a no no. Neither is docking it by a bunch of jagged rocks.

So, at least a few of us are coming down from Boston for the races, probably Friday night. Do any of you generous souls have space for us to crash in? I think we're fine with being split up if it takes more than one apartment.

wish i had space, but i'll be boarding other non bikers that weekend.

As far as the randalls island thing goes, its actually not a bad ride down there at all, although I did get a tad confused as to how to get down there when i first crossed the bridge. Tommorow I'm gonna do a good portion of the route with a bunch of guys (we're hopin to meet up at around 1:00 at the race start tommorow to take a relaxed run through the lower manhattan, brooklyn and queens checkpoints).

Okay, anybody know for sure if we do or don't have to do the checkpoints in order? I rode half the course in order last Sunday, and my legs are still smarting. Of course, the windstorm that day didn't make it easier.

By the way, I'm one of the pathetic Bostonians needing a place to crash. I promise to snore and drool all over whatever sleeping surface you provide.

just FYI: we're not going in the order they have on the site tommorow. We're basically just doing closest way between two points. If the race is any other way, it'll be easy enough to figure out a new route, i'm sure.

They are working on it.

MrRed , I hope you meant Roosevelt Island.

I course is fun fast and long and can be confusing at points. I had a blast.

and they're working on the order of checkpoints? as it looks, the quickest route is about 27 miles, give or take.

so i got through as far as roosevelt island and it wasn't too bad. The only thing you really gotta watch out for are the wierd expansion joint on the queens side of the bridge going to roosevelt island. I just cracked my rim when it didn't quite clear the joint and got caught. And ... I just got that wheel yesterday and its already back in the shop.
