Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

43x16, for the odd number of skid spots.

the hill is fast enough on a freewheel. i don't think i'd ever go done it fixed without a brake. it's a little too hairy for me especially the right turn down near the garden. i always got stuck behind slow cars as well. have you tried pinehurst fixed?

i run 44/17 and 47/18. i've been thinking about gearing up but think my knees will walk out on me after a day of seattle's hills.

that's what I got too. I think it's pretty good, but I'm new to fixed, still breaking it in.

fwiw, that's not exactly a tall gear. it's about as functionally the same as my 49/18 (or 46/17, 43/16, etc.) - i'd rather spin a little anyway, as it makes my knees a little bit happier.

Right on. Just saying, a lot of folks seem to stick w/ the same gear and never mix it up... Old salt like you knows that there are gains to be made by mixing up the gearing.
