Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

39x15 on the conversion.
48x16 at the track. This is probably going to go up to 50x16 soon.

I was always off doing road rides and going up Tunnel and down Redwood. Redwood is super fast on a freewheel but I think I couldn't keep up with the cadence going fixed even though it does flatten out considerably.
Yeah, the descents always make me want a freewheel. Holding my rpms down to 120 or so really starts to get on my nerves when I know what riding down hills like redwood or papa bear at 40-50 mph feels like. I love the way fixed feels too much - though if I ever stop buying things for this bike and save my money for a bit I think a solid, classic road bike would be a nice thing to take out in the hills every once in a while.

Going uphill in some spots around here really just involves manhandling your bike and making ever effort to destroy your bottom bracket.

42x16 basically rules for the rolling terrain of Sioux Falls.

It's a treat on the flats too.

The best is coming down centennial fixed. Marin was built for cable cars, so it's straight and has flats, centennial has wicked pedal-striking turns. The descent will get your heart rate higher than the climb.

Bikes: I built the Bianchi track bike back up today.

44x14, 44x16. 44x16 seems more comfortable.

I thought it strange that I couldn't get as fast at the track running 48x14 as I could when I was running 44x16 drunk through the streets last time I was in Chicago...

Bikes: many.

You'll all be stronger riders if you mix up your gearing once in a while.
