Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? 52/19

I feel its a bit tall for hard climbing or good skids, but it works, with brake.

Bikes: Dean TI fixie... Viner ProComp... NEXT pink sparkely!

i second 47/16, but my bike is pretty light. It will be personal pref in the end depending on your bike and how big you are.

my city gear is a 48x17... kind of similar to ceya's. I swear by it though... I think it's the perfect gear for a city with small rolling hills but nothing too excessive.

70 gear inches.. dont fear the spin.. contrary to popular belief.. pushing hard gears does not get the chicks.. they actually dont even notice you dont have multiple gears most of the time.. (some of them dont even notice you have a bike...)

forum queens excluded from that stereotype, of course

45x18. Yeah, it's low, but very comfy and I have a ton of control and I still maintain a good cruising speed at a comfortable cadence. That said, one of these days when I buy a new chain I'll probably go back to 48x18 since my legs are stronger now.

Hey...nothing beats a free T-shirt from work....right??? Oh yeah, you can't beat the Stock Options Too....

Thanks for all the info....I might just try the 48/16 ratio....52/18 is not too bad, I just have to be off the seat the whole time climbing.

G14Classified, do you know Salim at work? I know he rides fixed because he is friends with my old housemate Cody and I saw his name on a fixie mailing list and our invite list for a party. It's a crazy small world. Are there many fixie heads there? Hopefully my interview goes well on Tuesday and there will be one more.

48x16 because the stock gearing has been fine. I had larger hills to deal with when I was in East Bay but I have done a few hill climb workouts done here on the fixie. Nothing like mashing up a hill and having your legs burn like none other.

48/16 on one, 42/16 on the other. i'm actually thinking of bringing the 48 down a notch or two though.

49/17 and I can now, after having to walk quite a few times, make it up pretty much every hill in the east bay.

Marin is a no go in this gear. But I can do Spruce and Euclid and all that to get to the same place. Not quite as many man-points I guess. Have you tried going down Marin, freewhell or fixed? Like a rollercoaster. Frightening.

Those hills are tough, but it's really worth the effort though. I think I'll stick to freewheel coasting downhill for now. My thighs are like JELLO pudding after the climb!!! Whoo

Fixed Gear- 42/16. Not too hilly in Delaware (but I do live up on top of a big hill and in a hilly part). My commute for the most part is either flat or slight hills. I like to spin though and I can stop pretty quickly with 42/16. I've rode other ratios on other bikes but I like 42/16 the best out of them.

SS MTB- 38/18. Hilly courses, I can get up most of the hills that are actual parts of the trails fine. Theres a few small but veryyy steep hills though that I have yet to conquer.

OK....with a 52/18 Ratio...at what speed do you reach before your legs start becoming EGG Beaters?

The highest cadence I think I've hit is around 170, which in 53x18 is 39.5 mph. between 140 and 150 is where I don't have very much control anymore and is as fast as I've gotten on flat ground - in a 53x18 is between 32.5 and 35 mph.

Are you in the East Bay, by the way?
