Originally i thought it would be an interesting way of doing an emergancy brake but im going to do either bar end or hooded levers now with front and rear breaks

Yeah, I wasn't sure what was going on with that thing, which is why I made my comment a bit vague. ;)

800 kilos worth

Ok so then 650c wheels might give me issues with pedal strike. Does anyone have experience with 650b? Are they easy to come by/cheap? Sorry for totally hijacking this thread :(

If you want to convert that bike to a fixed gear, then you want to get a rear wheel with hub threading for a fixed cog and lockring. Finding such a wheel in a 650b rim size will be very difficult. Do you understand how a fixed gear works ?

Ok so I will try and test fit some 650c at some point thanks.

Two quick questions actually:

-does this seem like an appropriate platform to build a touring/townie FG from?
-would putting modern 650c wheels on it be a crime? my LBS said the cheapest sets they sell is 180 for a pair and they have formula hubs and "a semi deep rim" whatever that means

ps can I just put a track hub into the EA3 wheel?

I like this color. If you just want cheap and functional, keep everything but the brakes and handlebars - replace those with something more functional, your LBS should be able to help. Grease the hubs, bottom bracket, and headset and ride it. Don't spend a lot of money fixing this up, though, unless you have a sentimental attachment. As others have said, it won't ever be worth what you'd spend fixing it up. (unless it's actually some fancy vintage frame that none of us can make out from your photo)

Also, this website is a great source of information about many things bicycle, and it can provide answers for a lot of basic questions, and none of the attitude. For example Tire Sizing or Fixed Gear For The Road

I already regreased everything aside from building wheels I do everything myself. Im an auto mechanic by day and apperently a bicycle abortionist by night. Its sentimental because I'm poor and this is the first bike I bought. I like these old american bikes because they're easy to work on. I like riding fixed gear because it was what I started riding on. Sheldon brown is my most visited site. Basically I just came here for a quick opinion and I deffinetly got some opinions. Anyways Im done wasting everyones time with my scrap metal now

We can't be both?

Internet bullies.

motrheadsroadie 01-14-17 01:39 PM

its 2017 and literally NO ONE IN THE WORLD should want to convert an archaic 26x 1 3/8 schwinn sized wheel to a fixed gear.

hairnet 01-14-17 01:40 PM

Classic RBI

Sure, but the elitists ruin all the fun.

JeremyLC 01-14-17 10:13 PM

If I calculate that I need a 265mm spoke and I can only get a 264mm or a 266mm, which size should I use?

seau grateau 01-14-17 10:29 PM

I think the general recommendation is to round up. Pretty sure that's what I did when I built my wheels.

What spoke?

I disagree. I always go to the shorter length. Having one fewer threads engagement on the nipple is never a problem, but bottoming out the threads is a problem. Remember, spokes stretch when they are tightened.

franswa 01-15-17 10:23 AM

No lbs with a spoke cutter?
