is it just me or is that not that great of price? I feel like I could do better on ebay...

mattface 12-01-05 08:48 AM

You think you could do better than $120 for a new CPX22/Formula Fixed/Fixed wheelset? good luck.

I just checked it out to see how much the total cost would be. With shipping and tax (minus the 20% discount) you'd wind up paying $145 to get them shipped to Illinois...

mattface 12-01-05 08:55 AM

or you could buy the same wheelset from Chucksbikes for $165 plus shipping, or similar off ebay for $150 plus shipping. I've been looking at formula wheelsets for a while, and I've never seen them lower than $150 new.

chicagoamdream 12-01-05 09:03 AM

Sweet...what a great price. Thanks for pointing this out.

genericbikedude 12-01-05 09:06 AM

how do you know that they are mavic rims? it says so nowhere on the website.

also, who builds these wheels? a robot? an uncaring prole? i'd be careful before buying them.

what kind of spokes?

wheels are not a place to cheap out, IMO

queerpunk 12-01-05 09:09 AM

<snark>dude, GBD, it says MAVIX CXP22 in big letters. that's how i know they're mavic rims. not sure what tricks the other folks are using to determine that one... </snark>

sorry for the snark, it's over now.

maybe a phone call would determine how nashbar builds their wheels and what spokes they're using. wheels aren't a place to cheap out, you're right, but finding out the information and being pleased with it might result in a solid wheelset for a fairly affordable price.

genericbikedude 12-01-05 09:13 AM

uhhh, right. maybe I should concentrate less on the fine print next time. :o

bostontrevor 12-01-05 09:33 AM

For comparison, I've tried to build some cheaper. Let's say $75 for the hubset (don't shop Nashbar on this, they don't have the best price). We'll go with a set of MA40 rims they have on clearance. Sure, they're only 28h, but let's pretend that I could find similar pricing on a set of 32h ($25 ea), $50. Now I'm too lazy to try to comparison shop for spokes, so I'll just go with what my LBS sells 'em for. If you buy them online, you usually kill any savings by ending up with too many and paying shipping anyhow. That's $32 for two wheels worth of straight gauge.

Grand total: $75 + $50 + $32 = $157 and I'm still short the lockring...for $8 more than what Nashbar is charging.

They're probably machine built, but so what? What I've got above isn't built at all. For $8 less, I wouldn't mind taking the machine built and tensioning and stress relieving by hand.

kbabin 12-01-05 09:59 AM

I have a set of these wheels I bought last year. I did need to get the rear wheel trued, but I weigh 220lbs!!!! So, if you are looking for a lower price set of wheels got with these. If not, Go IRO!!!

trons 12-01-05 10:40 AM

i feel compelled to buy these even though i really don't have much use for them.

LoveParkRIP 12-01-05 10:41 AM

wow. perfect timing. thanks for the coupon code

teadoggg 12-01-05 10:55 AM

They really raised the price on the individual track hubs... I picked up a set 4 or 5 months ago for $45, shipped. They were on sale, but even the regular price was much lower than they are now.

That being said, they're great hubs for the money.

brooklyn 12-01-05 11:30 AM

do you think i would have any problems using these on a 126mm frame?

I wouldn't try it -on the nashbar hubs I have the axle is pretty short. it's just long enough for my 120 spaced frame, but I don't think I'd try it on 126. IRO sells hubs spaced to 126, I think. check them out.

k3nho 12-01-05 12:13 PM

are the axles on the formula/mavic wheelset long enough to respace to 126mm?

Not sur about the formulas but since they are the same as the IROs, I'd say yes. My IRO hubs rightnow have the axles sticking out at least 10mm on each side.

almost.
IRO specs a longer axle on their hubs.

i have my formulas spaced out to 126mm. I have enough axle to secure the wheels, but not enough to thread all the way into the track nuts. no wheel slipping.

i have IROs too, but i hacked off all the excess axle. it kept getting caught on stuff.

my problem exactly:)

You'll definitely have to, as mine rattled completely apart in a couple of kms. If they're not built by a machine, they're built by something worse.

The old pre-discount price was 130 then 140 a bit later.

If it's steel you can squeeze it. I'm doing it now on two different bikes.

LoveParkRIP 12-01-05 02:10 PM

I talked to somebody from Nashbar ealier today about the wheelset...

"Since I'm sure these are sent to you pre-built by a machine, do the wheels require truing?"

"Gary Tech: They are trued before being boxed, but I recommend you check them for trueness when taking them out of the box"

nice to know

As with all wheels that you recieve through the mail from a box.

Definitely. I have this wheelset and my frame is spaced 130. It just fits.

I got them wholesale. They cost 85 dollars. New Guy also has a pair, and we wish his Mom had ordered 20 sets. She has since sold her shop.

They are 100% machine built. I'd be surprised if a human hand ever touched them before me. A front spoke loosened up on me after about a week. I tightened it and noticed one whole side was a little loose. I tightened everything up a bit and it is fine. The back wheel seems to make a lot of noise, I guess the spokes are clanging into each other a bit because they are probably loose too. The hubs are surprisingly nice, spin smoothly. They are not light. They are not that stiff. What they are is a great deal.

I really only needed the front, or so I thought, until I broke the axle on my Level rear hub. What can I say, I destroy stuff, Reed said he would try to have an improved axle to me this week. Since I had this wheelset in reserve, it kept me on the road.

If you just want a decent wheelset that will get you on the road, and especially if you can do a little work on the spoke tension yourself, this is still a great deal. They are not hip, though. As if...

Thanks for the info. I am probably going to pick up a pair for my current fixie, but i did see that fuji track pro over at chuckbikes.com in my size...

norcostorm 12-01-05 07:13 PM

i just ordered a set of these. does anyone know how long it will take to ship to canada?

baxtefer 12-01-05 07:14 PM

^ somewhere between 1 and 3 weeks. depending on customs.

norcostorm 12-01-05 07:25 PM

will i get charged duty on them for sure? and how much duty would i have to pay?

shecky 12-01-05 10:47 PM

Unless you get them really cheap. ;) Like the fixed rear wheel I got from the now defunct big-wheel.com for less than $40.

Have to say, it's held up fine with me for over a year and a half. And I'm no lightweight. All I did was pack the bearings before use. I haven't even really needed to true them up. The rim is a cheap Weinmann and the hub is the cheap alloy Suzue flip flop. It did come with a cheap steel 15t cog, but it fit a bit too sloppy, so I used a Dura Ace instead.

I think this wheel was one of those generic "Wheelmaster" machine made things often seen in saran wrap hanging in bike shops.
