horizontal dropouts
Is it possible to run quick releases on a horizontal dropout, without the wheel coming loose all the time? Will quick releases keep the wheel tight compared to an axle nut? thanks party on

Common thinking is that it is a very bad idea. Some people do it, but it's generally advised against specifcally because QRs don't hold the axel in place well enough.

I do it. Not on a fixie as I don't own one, but on my retro MTB that I did up with XT.
I have run XT hubs in horizontal dropouts without issue for a while now. Obviously, you do need to make sure the skewers are as tight as they will reasonably go, but otherwise they're fine.

Nothing is as good as a solid axle with track nuts (in my opinion), but a quick release will work if you use the right kind. What you need is an internal cam type with a steel shaft. This means that the lever thingy is coming out of a covered unit. Salsa QR's are NOT what you want. You want an old DA or XTR/XT/LX hub QR. These are usually steel, and will last a long, long time.
Alternatively, Nashbar has some allen head QR's, no lever, just an allen-headded nut on each end. Depending on what those are made of, they may work too.
