Passenger Fixie Part 2: Banana Seat Edition
I've been doing some more thinking about carrying human cargo on a bike. Banana seats seem like an interesting solution, one that could potentially work with my existing steed, which is a Mark V. Some questions:
1) Is my bike burly enough to support the weight of two humans on a banana seat? Do I risk harming the frame, rim (velocity aerohead, IRO basic rear wheel) or axle? Would a larger tire help? How big a tire can I fit on a Mark V?
2) Do all seats use a standard rail width? I.e., would I need a new seatpost for a banana seat?
3) Do they make sissybars long enough for 700c wheel bikes? (My seat is fairly high off the top tube)
4) Are banana seats even big enough for two adults, or are they strictly for kiddies?
I look forward to hearing all thoughts on this matter. Thanks guys.

Most banana seats don't have rails. Instead they have two tabs where the seat gut bolt goes through. I think you could find a sissy bar long enough to do it.
I've also found that the padding in banana seats leaves somethign to be desired.
They're made for kids, so the foam is pretty thinly wrapped over a stamped steel shell.
yeah.

Something like this might work:
adult-sized banana seat
It comes with its own (oddly-sized) seatpost. Maybe you could shim it to fit. I can't see the mount in the pic but it looks like it might be a standard two-piece seatpost like you see on cheap/old bikes. It probably would be far cheaper for them to have adapted the design to one of those (buy from taiwan for 3 cents) instead of fabbing their own custom piece.
Worth a call, maybe.

Besides, since the mounting point is on the bike's dropouts, no ENO is needed if the bike already has horizontal d/o's.

Any device that has the words "banana" and "sissy" in it, I'd try and avoid.

On a bike with a banana seat, you're still going to sit pretty far back on it. I think the extracycle idea, or some other sort of completely flat rack, is the best idea. That's how they do it in Amsterdam. Also, what if the passenger gets something caught in the rear wheel or cog?
