Hit and Run database
So yeah, read Caffinated's Post about a Hit and Run in SF.
it's also happened to me before and i think this is a great idea ( isnt that right? MacG)
so here, a thread for ideas of how this thing is going to look like.
anything would be fine, i.e what the database should include, maybe an intergrated layer for Google Map to pin point where it happened and etc.

only the license plate or a description of the inncident and the car would help too,
does it HAVE to have a webmaster, how about..an open source where everyone just puts in data, and bunch of volunteers with some web knowledge to keep it running without bugs every once in a while.
again, i dont know much about the website part, but i just think it would be a great idea.
and what the crazy cyclist do with the information is non of our business.
i'd like to see this going though :/

I'd like to see a database of accidents where it was clearly the car driver's fault. Something like a google maps interface where people can add where they were hit. It could show places on the road where it's just setup in a way that is unsafe to cyclists. might be interesting/useful to see that 10 accidents occured at a certain spot, and you might avoid riding there if possible.

I like skelly's idea. I don't understand the point of having a database of aggresive drivers. Am I supposed to memorize these liscence plates and if I see on quickly get on the side walk? I just don't really see the point.

but yes, i agree.
i also thought about having a Google map layer, so the incidents can be pin pointed on the map, and bascially show the density of where incidents happen mostly.
also, a RSS feed would be interesting,
say it's updated by incidents, and everytime someone posts something up it'll get sent to the receiver's e-mails. maybe they could use their blueberries or e-mail compatible cellphones to check on updates.
just might become handy, becuase if we have the site small then it wouldnt take up much bandwidth, therefore allowing easier acces to the database from say a cell phone for instance updates or a wireless hotspot.

i just know some spots that are just bad places to ride, from a combination of weird turns/roads, traffic concentration, poor visibility of bike lane, etc.. you might not even know these spots are dangerous until you hear that 5 people have been hit there or something.
it would be more useful than a database of aggressive drivers, because a hit-and-run isn't usually location-specific. the ******* drives all over town. maybe do both ideas seperately. i think anyone can do something like this using Frappr (www.frappr.com)

For when you actually do (or don't do) the database:
Third and Mission, San Francisco.
I was in the middle of the second lane from the right, as the right lane is a right turn only lane. I got passed by an articulated bus, which then merged into my lane, leaving me with a narrower and narrower gap.
As sometimes happens with accidents, time slowed down.
I basically saw that I had two choices: get scrunched between the bus and the cars, and go down at high speed; or aim for a car stopped to make the turn and go over the hood.
I chose #2. It hurt, but not that bad. The woman in the car: "Oh my God! I'm so sorry! What did I do?" It would have been funny, because she didn't actually do anything, of course. I had witnesses, a bunch, but I didn't think to get their names at the time, because I was rather shook up. Except for a wicked hop in the front wheel, my bike was okay.
I have continued to hate Muni ever since.
