Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? The new Surly that I'm building for my commute (not fixed) has 3 bottle cages on it. One for coffee on ride in, one for water during the day, and one for beer on the ride home. The cyclist's trinity.

Bikes: many bikes

For those training for that upcoming alleycat, or pubcrawl....Ice cold beer makes a really good recovery drink.

There is the Niner YAWYD top cap for those with a 1 and 1/8 steerer tube.

Bikes: several. blue. fun.

bikes and beer are great together because sometimes it's hard to drink enough sparks without going insane.

Cheers, my fellow hops, barley, and bike lovers. I apologize if the posting initially read as a complaint! Far from it! More beer, please. As for jessefive, please post a photo of you Surly, loaded down with the trinity, when you finish building. Sounds awesome. Anyone ever seen a 40-bottle cage?

that's just ********. cops, florida, and cops, are ********.
this explains just why beer and bikes go together so well. we all hate civilization, and we need/want to get away. drugs (beer) does it, and so does the lack of a car.

For me, it goes bike, beer(s), cigerette(s)... and then, I'm in heaven...

I usually only drink 3-4 times a month, and rarely have over 6-8 drinks, and never smoke unless I'm drinking.

If I owned a brew pub, I'd be dead at 30.

Coffee on the way to work, water thorughout the day, PBR on the way home. Get home, go surfing, drink more beer to keep warm.

Yeah I always told that riding at a racing pace for 50 or so miles will burn 600-900 calories. I know that Tour De France racers burn an average of almost 6000 calories per day, and that's an average between 120 mile days and 10 mile time trials. 3000 calories burned by even an enthusiast seems insane.

I've got a bottle-holder meant for large Nalgene bottles that I'm pretty sure would work for a '40.
It's got a big rubber strap to hold it down. If I could remember the brand I'd tell you.

Beer is a godsend for skinny dudes like me.

It keeps me a little plump so I don't look sickly. It also a) makes me feel good, b) comforts me when i'm bored and c) Yuengling is tasty as hell.

When I didn't drink I weighed 110... now I weigh 140. Perfect.

Bikes: bikes without brakes

Alcohol's huge role in bike culture actually really bothers me. I'm tired of every critical mass here ending at a bar.

Start a vegan, straight edge CM ride.

I think one of the main objectives of a critical mass ride is to gather as many bike riders in the area together to make it apparent that cycle commuting is a serious mode of transportation. Starting a vegan straight edge ride would take riders away from critical mass just like splitting up to hit up bars does. I can be vegan and straightedge (although I don't affiliate myself with the straightedge movement, I just don't drink or do drugs) without anyone else in critical mass knowing, can't drunks do the same? Maybe I am being too harsh but I don't think anyone can argue that splitting up or ending a critical mass ride early is more important than actively protesting car culture. Above all it's completely alienating to kids riding critical mass that are under 21 when the entire ride decides to hang out for the remainder of the ride inside of a bar.

this is totally different based on your age, fitness level, wattage output and weight.

i wear a HRM sometimes when I ride, and 45 min on rollers at ~166bpm is about 600 cal for me. 20 mi this AM at 19mph average was 950. for me, 3000 cal would be about 65 mi at my normal pace.

if you really wanna know what you're burning, i recommend a HRM. they're pretty accurate.
