Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

(Having the world's most overrated ugly and heavy rims shipped to the UK from abroad would be... silly. Very silly. Just buy CXP-33's or other nice rims and be done with it. No need to be like the 61293710664 other fixed riders who have deepvees.)

Bikes: Cocaine the white stallion, Custom Witcomb pista, (Being restored) 80's Pogliaghi Track, (destroyed) RAP Round Breeze NJS, Cannondale Jekyll 900, 84/5 Pinarello Montello (all italian)

Highly, I've shipped a few over before. They're in pretty high demand here so do what I did and get a few people to place an order with you. Just watch out for customs tax. I reccommend Trackstar or Kingkog for your deep-v needs. T* did me solid with their ship job/price. Not much more than paying for CXP33s in these parts.

If everyone were like you, then you wouldn't be so special.

I have no doubt CXP-33's are nice rims, but I'm rather taken by the aero look. What would you reccomend aero wise that I can get in the UK or does aero qualify as ugly, full stop?

Gotta love UPS. They delivered one of the packages today by leaving it at the door. Didn't knock or even ring. The second package containing the frame showed "out for delivery" all day and never showed up. Even when I called they promised that it would be delivered today. That's only to call an hour later and be told it never left the main hub even though the website showed it did as well as their previous support person told me.

F-UPS.

Now I gotta wait till Tuesday due to the long weekend. They won't even let me pick it up at the main hub as they are closed until then. So glad I paid extra to get all the other parts here on time...

I'm no expert on rims at all... Maybe someone else will suggest another rim, or google "aero rim", search rim-makers' sites etc.

To me, almost all aero rims are pretty ugly, but deepvee especially. I'm not fond of the flat aero sections at all. Plus it is not deep enough to actually make a difference in aerodynamics, but you do get the weight penalty and the crosswind troubles. So you get zero benefit and all of the drawbacks (to a bearable extent, obviously. Neither the weight nor the sail effect are all that bad.)
The big selling point of it is that you can get it non-machined in candy colors. Real hipster stuff.

Riding aero rims in an urban environment is just not very clever. You make no use of the benefit they offer, because that only comes at higher speeds. The weight is a big minus if you have to stop and accelerate often, which you do in a city. Plus the high profile makes their ride harsher, again not much fun in pothole-land.

Sorry to bring this up in a thread about a new deepvee wheelset. I know they are perfectly fine rims for a good price, and I know I'm a jerk

The bottom line is, if you like the looks and don't mind the minor impracticality, nor the fact that everyone and their mother rides one, allá tú. I won't. Never ever.

dont deep vees offer more strength per spoke than non deep vee rims... helping them stay truer longer... or was that just jibberish?

Not all aero rims have a deep profile. and not all of them are flat, either. i have some nice low to medium profile arayas with a beautifully rounded shape. They're great. Never been a huge fan of the deep vs either, tho.

Preatty much, yes, I believe. Obviously, they are pretty solid rims, just like dozens of other rims. The deep profile makes them stiffer and stronger in a vertical direction than standard rims, which is of no use whatsoever, in any riding style or conditions. Arguably, it makes them less comfy to ride on, though. A rim has to be stiff and strong laterally, not vertically. [/HATE]

Mavic and Halo both do a deep-section rim. I'm building a wheelset on the Ambrosio ones at the moment.

It is done:

Got a rear brake caliper by accident. Other than that, the build went great. Need to get a shorter stem and a straight seatpost though. Still working on how I like the bars too.. Rides like butta and is fairly light. Now lets hope the weatherman is wrong and it doesn't rain the rest of the week.
