Those who run brakes...

...and rely mostly on your brakes for stopping, do any of you not use a lockring?

Even if you rely on your brakes for stopping that would be stupid.

I use my brake when I need to stop, but I still use my legs to regulate my speed quite a bit. I would be very nervous running without the lock ring on there. It is a cheap part and not one using seems to be asking for trouble.

if you never use your legs to slow down or stop, why not just get a freewheel?

I've run brakes + suicide for beaters, which is fine (no clips, so I'm not going to skip or skid anyway). This is fine, if anything does go wrong you just grab the brakes. Not using a lockring on a real track hub is just dumb.

your coster brake has a lockring, otherwise the cog would fall off.

Yes. On the wheels I've converted, a couple didn't have enough room for a BB lockring. So I tightened them really tight and used blue locktite. On my first conversion, in fact, I asked in the order to Harris if they would throw a BB lockring in the order. The written response on the invoice said, "sorry, we're ought of lockrings. Sheldon says just use blue locktite." Of course, maybe they were just SAYING that, and never checked with him at all?

Whatever, thousands of trouble free miles later, never had a problem other than my first test ride around the block when it spun off on the second corner cuz I didn't keep peddling and hadn't locktited the cog or tightened it more than finger tight.

50/50 brake/pedal modulation, but why wouldn't I use a lockring?

*raises hand*

But then the lockring threads are stripped...

It's really funny how much of an issue people make suicide hubs to be. The same people who ride without a brake

If you have a front brake and spin off the cog, you just pedal forward and use the brake.

Riding fixed doesn't imply that you skid all over the place like a silly 12 year-old. Speed modulation, trackstands and backwards circles work just fine w/o a lockring. Of course, if you have a track hub with good threads, it makes no sense not to use the lockring... unless you race track and can't be bothered.

i use my brake almost exclusively on my commute to work, as there are several big hills that end in stop lights that i prefer to bomb down. i feel that relying on my legs to modulate speed makes my legs stronger, and makes me ride more safely.

personally, i would never run without a lockring, as i can't completely trust the holding power of a rotafixed cog with or without loctite. applying backpressure is an integral part of how i ride, and i can't depend on something that isn't as reliable as a lockring. decent rear track wheels run about $100, money well spent.

I use my brake and I could never backpedal hard enough to spin my cog off.

The reason I posted this thread is because back when I didn't have a flip-flop hub I would simply carry another cog and halfway into a long ride if I needed to change my gearing for any reason I would rotafix off the cog and spin on the other. No lockring. Never had a problem.

Unless you are really using it as a track hub. Then it makes perfect sense.

Riding without a lock ring is kinda dumb, and dangerous. It's like mustard on a hotdog: you can do with out, but you'd just be cheating yourself.

Bikes: some but not enough

Never ever even crossed my mind not to install the lock ring. But if I were to start bringing extra cogs with me on rides, I guess I will be bringing a lock ring tool too.

My freewheel hub does not have enough space for a lock ring, so it's sprocket + locktite for me!

Your freewheel hub also does not have the threads for a lock ring. Lock rings use left hand threads so the movement of the cog won't loosen the ring.

I don't think a break adds any weight to your bike. In fact I think it decreases it.

Agreed, pit stop breaks always do that for me.
