I just started doing this myself. Trying to do some retro styled 50s-ish illustrations so I scanned in some bits of newspaper ads/colors for my fills. Working with clipping masks and scanned swatches in illustrator is the new pink.

I'd say your use of swatches looks pretty good. I have recently started to favor Illustrator because it looks cleaner (gotta love vectors), prints well, and is generally smaller in file size than PS files.
This is the only example I have on my computer at the moment and its not finished, but you get the idea.

I'm gonna set up my own scanned swatch library over the break which will be nice.

I feel like the chainring/cog thing has kinda been done to death (I like it a a lot, but anything I would have done would have just been ripping off something else that I liked better) and derailleurs are cool looking!

I don't have any on my bikes, but I still think they are cool as hell.

How effective is hairspray as a fixative for charcoal? I really don't want to spend $8 on the real stuff.

i have two types of fixative, one for charcoal and one for my sennelier pastels, which cost $15 (but its made specifically for pastels and its worth it considering the pastels are 3.50 a stick)

i've never used hairspray but i caught my brother trying to last week and gave him my fixative. you know they make workable fixative so you can spray and keep working. And i don't think its $8, more like 5.49 or something i say just spend the money, its lasts a long time and good tools are the way to go.

dick blick art store is your friend. they are also cheaper online.

TiP: you're right, I'll suck it up. I hate spending the money just for drawing assignment, but I guess I should start making a portfolio.

having a workspace and tools is the most important thing. If you do not have them, you will not work or you will have difficulty working. It is difficult working prodigiously outside of the comradery, support, challenges, critiques and most of all the DEADLINES of a structured environment such as a fine institution.

not that saving a few bucks on fixative will make or break you though, just a thought.

enjoy what you've got going and put everything you've got into it. working on the solo kind of sucks, but then again sharing a studio sucked too.

the project i'm currently working on with a friend is called 52 pieces about nothing, it's a year-long weekly series of streaming audio clips with a piece of accompanying art, which is basically a hand-drawn cd sleeve on brown paper that a friend of ours did a series of this year
the audio tracks range from 20 min+ experimental sound-pieces to call & response sax/gtr with drones and doublebass drumming with guitar hysterics
