Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Going back and reading Decline's replies in this thread, it appears he did stuff tape in the BB shell and the headtube and taped off the brake posts. Also, it seems he used tape to mask off some racing stripes and then proceeded with the coat(s) of red paint. Perhaps Decline is using the term headset instead of headtube? Either way, the bike will still work. Now if that were a Chris King headset, that would be another story.

Decline, I suggest you go here and read Sheldon Brown's page regarding singlespeeds and visit the Park Tools website here in regards to installing parts on your bike. And, here is MTBR's SSFAQ page again. Read up young man, read up!

Maybe I was just lucky, but it took me about five minutes to find the magic gear. With vertical dropouts, if the chain gets too loose it's telling you that it's worn out.

I am starting to wonder if some of the comments may have run this guy off the forum. I would like to see how his bike ends up...and also get an answer to that headset question.

If so, the kid needs thicker skin.
What's he going to do the first time some driver calls him a "***" and tells him to "get on the sidewalk."

Haha, I missed this thread up till now.

Actually, I'm loving the painted-over headset. If no paint got in the bearings, it's just fine. Of course, it's gonna suck when it needs to be repacked down the line. But, for now: no disasembly/assembly, no masking, cool looks.

I just hope you did tape off the brake bosses, cuz there's no chance in heel the brakes will fit on top of the paint.

*wondering why the OP said he taped the hs off with electrical tape. The headtube doesn't look like it was taped, either.*
