Fixed Gear "Pegs"

On my morning commute there are a couple of big hills that kill me to try and keep up with the spin on the fixie, so I picked up a pair of carbon stoker pegs (they take the place of brake levers on the rear of a tandem) and brazed on some modified brake bosses on the sides of my Zion fork (think I voided the warrantee?).

It made for great coasting down hill this morning with my feet on the pegs. I just need to add a Gyro and I can start doing fixie tail whips.

The funny thing is after a rather long, fast descent this morning, I thought of the same thing except I was wishing for pegs mounted on the seat stays so that I could swing my legs up and out of the danger of my flailing crank arms.

For now, I'll just contine to resist downhill.

Nice idea...expect much criticism!

Everything old is new again. Look at any fixed gear road bike from the early 1900s, and you'll likely see similar pegs on the forks. Then they invented the freewheel, and coaster pegs were forgotten.

P.S. I'd want a rear brake if I was going to do that.

I just rest my feet on the chain stays. Just keep the heels clear of the drivetrain and spokes.

I put my feet inside the front triangle sometimes. Not too hard to rest them on ST/DT/each other. More stable than way up front or back on the chainstays. Well, I used to before I put on a bottle cage.

Yea, I was doing that too, but my cleats scratched the paint pretty good. Guess I could have just put on some protective 3M film, but oh well...

Bikes: 2 Unicycles duct taped together

There's a messenger on the east coast (forget which city) who's got bars mounted on a surly fork, at the top of the fork crown. Instead of coasting though, he uses them in place of drop bars. GET LOW!

Brass brazing is about 1600 degrees. Steel melts at about 2300 degrees. I didn't heat the fork blades up anywhere near a danger point.

How do you think rack mounts are attached on touring forks? or v-brake bosses to steel forks? Brazing or TIG (which is much hotter than brazing). Shouldn't be any problem.

Bikes: '85 Full Cycle Cycle.

On a bike with a square fork crown, it's pretty easy to pop your feet up there. No pegs, no fuss.
I like the initiative though.

I often thought of putting BMX pegs on my back axles
but then it would become too problematic to run toeclips.....

I ordered a set of pegs specifically for doing this. Since most fixed hubs are bolt-on axles, it's quick and easy modification. We'll see how well it works in reality, however.

Bikes: a bunch.

Primo makes a new BMX peg called the 'Jewel', and its REALLY small.
Its just a round nut, with a square hole in it for your rachet.

that's actually just an axle nut that's been around since the mid 90s. it was designed to make it way easier to take off and change pegs and fix flats and stuff since all you would need to carry around would be the ratchet and an extension if you had pegs.

there's also the Tofu pegs made by Profile Racing.

Heh, I guess its only now that people are ice picking directly onto the jewels.
..and I just realized, its only in 3/8" dia. 24 or 26tpi, so it wont really work.

I like to tuck my feet up over the fender in the rear, just past the seatstays & fly down the hill superman style.

bit sketchy when you hit a pothole or swerve, though.

I thought of doing that, but the front axle/hub was waaaaaay too far away to comfortably put my feet.

I can't vouch for what you're looking at but people have been doing pegless grinds for a while. Taj did one with jewels in old footage that was in that old UGP video and someone does them in that Resist video.

they did make 14mm jewels for a while.
