If you've got perfectionist tendencies, as I sometimes do, just rewrap the bars before you think too hard about it. You'll see that they look just as good afterwards, and try to forgot about the ickiness underneath

Goo Gone may not be lighter fluid, it does have that citrus smell, but it is very flammable. I can't remember what I was cleaning, or why I lit the paper towel soaked with Goo Gone, but it went up in flames very quickly.
I just rewrap bars without removing the residue, but maybe you want to leave some chrome showing. I don't know what Goo Gone will do to the chrome. If you have concerns, try a bit on a place that will be covered up.

moxfyre- I went from having wrapped bars and one brake to unwrapped bars and no brake. the chrome bars match my fork, seatstay and chainstay. aesthetics and grams!
