Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I'd answer her question, but I'm too busy getting a wire transfer to my buddy in Nigeria. Apparently he has $20,000,000 stuck in a Swiss account that he needs my help to get out. And I get a 50% cut! Yes!!

Come on, people, I've learned my lesson. No need to get the police involved.

And if my cautionary tale isn't enough to keep you people away from psychedelic drugs and fixed gear bicycles, remember the story of the famous television star's daughter who dropped a tab of acid and took her fixed Cannondale for a ride along the bluffs at Malibu. She started looking into the sunset as the acid peaked, became convinced that she could coast...and, well, you can probably guess the rest. Over the bars, over the cliff. She had her whole life ahead of her.

in the winter of 95/96, got out of nyc with my fixed. I wanted to see warm places. I greyhounded to LA and worked DTLA for four months as a bike messenger.

went to Mexico City from there (rode to TJ and took a nice bus).

partied with the LA messengers the night before I left and someone gave me a cross (and said be careful), someone else gave me two hits (and said have a blast).

Saved them until I got my hotel in the zocalo ($8US per night). Then dosed and hit the streets. It's a big beautiful fast and scary city, that first night will always be a wild memory.

Wow, this thread is like a huge advertisement for social darwinism. I never knew a lack of mental power was a requirement of riding fixed.

Bikes: Steelman eurocross, Surly CrossCheck, IRO Rob Roy...

I did a cross race after eating a SUPER powerbar. I thought the fun would start after the race... boy was I wrong. I just pulled off the course... and laughed at all my friends as they rode by. I couldn't figure out why they kept jumping on and off of their bikes.

Boy... we're all a bunch of junkies on this board.
