Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I was in the local bike shop yesterday buying some tires and rim tape to finish off my conversion (there's a thread about it in here somewhere) and overheard a kid who couldn't have been more than 17 trying to explain to his father how the "whole point of riding fixed gear is to not use brakes".

The dad didn't seem to get it, and there was much exasperated sighing from both parties.

when I move back to DC, i'll be building up a bike with a brake to commute. It's too hilly there not to have a brake just in case
