No it isn't. If anything it was probably a bike SB never got a chance to fix up properly. Reading his material on fixed gear, there is no way in hell he'd ride something that janky. Plus, it doesn't appear on his fixed gear fleet page, so in all likelihood it was a project he never got around to.

edit: Oopsie, it is listed on his bike page, but it's described there are having Ergo brifters on it, so it's also possible somebody cannibalized it, or he was doing some regular maintenance on it and, sadly, passed away while in mid-maintenance mode. I still stand by my assertion that there's almost no way he rode that bike as-is.

it does seem pretty un-sheldon, but I don't think it's that bad. i mean if anyone else did it people would be yelling jackass up and down, but... I dunno. I have a feeling i may play around with this idea, or not. whatever lol.

seriously, if it was anyone else's bike it would be pandemonium in here. "oh its sheldon brown's bike? lemme try to strap my brakes."

The toe strap is there to lock up the front wheel to assist "parking" the bike as it is in the other photos, the technique is more of a touring thing from my understanding.
Also the strap would normally pull on the brake lever, but this bike has no levers so it is jury rigged another way.

This is NOT a means of stopping a moving bike, just a means to prevent a standing bike from moving.

Even if it WERE a brake lever, I'm doubting the bike was intended for high-speed urban riding. I'd be more afraid of dropping that chain....

I prefer running the strap through the front wheel and around the downtube, also keeps the front wheel from flopping around when I have to carry the bike up & down stairs.

Not to mention the big ass dent in the top tube listed as "one small ding". Definitely not enough to be structural, but at the same time there's no ****ing way I'd spend two grand on a bike with a big conspicuous dent in the frame.

Are the downtube and forks covered in electrical tape?

what's hilarious is that as you know the fixed gear fad is huge in high schools and probably every single fixie kid at my school this past year gave me crap about my handlebars (set up properly) and my brakes (regular road front brake and on left side of bars the hood with lever removed). When I asked them why they had their bars set up improperly, the would always say "I like to get down low when I mash. What's interesting is that when I ride with them they NEVER ride in the drops, just on the tops of the bars with their hands right against the stem. so trendy lol
